The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation presented a $75,000 check to Rady Children’s Hospital at this year’s Charity Ball which was held on Jan. 31 at the Hotel del Coronado. “Sycuan is honored to support RCHSD in their mssion to provide state-of-the-art medical care for their patients, while improving the quality of life for children and their families,” said Chairman Cody Martinez. Roxi Link, chair of “Magic of Miracles” said this year the $400,000 raised is designated for the Neuro-Oncology Program.

Voices for Children Former Foster youth Rosie

Voices for Children Former Foster youth Rosie

Voices for Children held its annual Judges’ Luncheon on Feb. 2 at the University Club with VFC supporters, judges and politicians in attendance. Sharon Lawrence, CEO of VFC, provided an update on foster care in San Diego County. Former foster youth Rosie, shared her story and how she benefited from having a CASA representing her in the courts. Voices for Children has 1,500 volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocates who will provide direct advocacy to 2,400 local foster youth.

United Way of San Diego County is releasing $2 million to groups working collectively on common goals to help San Diegans from birth to third grade. “Collective Impact” focuses on two community goals getting children (1) ready for kindergarten and (2) reading at grade-level in the primary grades. It is funded by San Diego companies such as AT&T, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, GEICO, NASSCO, Solar Turbines and UPS. The initial RFP application is due to United Way by Mar. 11.

Union Bank and KPBS is honoring three San Diegans as local heroes during Black History Month. Honorees are: Dr. Gail Knight, chief of staff and chief, Division of Neonatology at Rady Children’s Hospital; and Andre Jones and Aaron Wooten, fatherhood program coordinators of the Father2Child program. They will be recognized in February at a private dinner with their families and executives from KPBS and Union Bank.

Cirque du Soleil – Fern Street Circus

Cirque du Soleil – Fern Street Circus

Cirque du Soleil has named Fern Street Circus its Social Action Partner in San Diego. Fern Street Circus has established an After-School Circus Program at Mid-City Gym in City Heights. The program will reach children and teenagers in this diverse underserved neighborhood for out-of-school activities for youth. Cirque du Soleil provided a $3,000 grant and 50 tickets to their show, Varkai. It will be performed on Feb. 28 at the Valley View Casino Center. Fern Street will receive proceeds from all tickets they sell.

The Walter J. & Betty C. Zable Foundation contributed $1 million to support Ocean Discovery Institute’s Living Lab. “We’re excited to have the opportunity to support Ocean Discovery Institute in a meaningful way, said Foundation President Warren Magill. By supporting the Living Lab, the Living Lab, the Foundation is making a difference for young people in need of opportunity while strengthening San Diego’s scientific workforce.”

The Vision of Children Foundation raised $57,000 during the 2014 year-end fundraising campaign. The funds provide vital dollars for scientists working to find cures for children’s eyesight. Also, the Santa Dollars program was a success thanks to partners Chase Suite Hotels, Wally’s Marketplace and Stumps Family Marketplace.
