2-1-1 San Diego Annual Connections Luncheon Honoring Health Care Service Providers

2-1-1 San Diego Annual Connections Luncheon was held on Feb. 21 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel honoring Health Care Service providers. Live Well San Diego, San Diegans for Healthcare Coverage and Legal Aid Society of San Diego were honored at the event which featured a “Superheroes of San Diego” theme. 2-1-1 also thanked staff member and named a standout volunteer for the year. This year’s recipient of the Henry Haimsohn Volunteer of the Year Award went to Bud Beck, a member of the 2-1-1 board of directors. Beck’s contribution to the organization began in 2005 and he served as board chair from 2008 to 2012.

ElderHelp is presenting its Essence of Life Awards Recognition Social and Charity Auction on Mar. 16 at the Southwestern Yacht Club in Point Loma. The event is being sponsored by Silvergate Bank. Award Honorees include Alliance Healthcare Foundation, AT&T, Michael Boden-Baumann, Judy Combs and Cara Barnes. ElderHelp has been providing “aging in place” services to seniors for the past forty years. These honorees have been dedicated to supporting the organization and have made significant contributions to ElderHelp.

AT&T employees teamed up with Junior Achievement on Feb. 20 to mentor 35 San Diego High students on topics such as decision-making, financial literacy, communication skills and career planning. The AT&T Aspire Mentoring Program is driven by AT&T employees who are passionate about making a difference. “Aspire Mentoring Academy provides an opportunity for employees to be a memorable influence in a young person’s life,” said Randal Okamura, director for AT&T external affairs.  Another AT&T event held on Feb. 27 was the National High Technology Day which offered a window into careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) to minority high school students.  “Many Latino students are unaware of potential careers in science and technology, so they miss out on valuable opportunities,” said Delia Hernandez, national president of HACEMOS. “We’re trying to change this through education.”

The University of California, San Diego Library, held it’s campus birthday party on Mar. 3 to celebrate the March 2 birthday of Dr. Seuss. The UC San Diego Library received a gift of more than 1500 additional items donated by Audrey Geisel from the personal archive of Theodor Seuss Geisel, Dr. Seuss. “I am pleased about more of Ted’s work and memorabilia being in Mandeville Special Collections at Geisel Library,” said Audrey Geisel. “His Seuss history will be preserved for posterity.” The party, which marks Dr. Seuss’s 110th birthday anniversary, featured a giant inflatable Cat in the Hat.

La Jolla Playhouse received three grants to support its world-premiere production of The Who & The What, by 2013 Pulitzer Prize winner Ayad Akhtar, directed by Kimberly Senior, running February 11 – March 9 in the Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre. The grants include the Edgerton Foundation New American Plays Award, as well awards from The Laurents/Hatcher Foundation and The Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation Theatre Visions Fund. Named one of the “Theatre Faces to Watch in 2014” by the L.A. Times, Ayad Akhtar (Playwright) won the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for his play, Disgraced.

San Diego Symphony’s 3rd annual Girls Night Out

San Diego Symphony’s 3rd annual Girls Night Out, A Celebration of Art & Fashion is being held on Mar. 26 at the ResMed building in San Diego. Sponsors of the event include ResMed, Margaret’s Couture Cleaners, Holland America Line and DW the Doctor’s Wife Skin Care. New and lightly used luxury items along with shoes and apparel accessories are offered at deeply discounted prices. A musical performance will be provided by San Diego Symphony. A drawing will be held for a 7-day cruise for 2 on the Holland America Line.
