The Walter J. and Betty C. Zable Foundation has announced a $1,000,000 challenge grant for Just in Time for Foster Youth. The funds will be distributed over three years and enhance JIT’s capacity to serve more young people leaving the foster care system with its transformative model of creating a community of support for them. The deadline for the first match of $333,000 is September 30, 2017, with $667,000 in additional 3-year written commitments by June 30, 2018. If JIT meets this challenge, then the Zable Foundation will make the second payment of $333,000 by September 30, 2018 and the third payment of $334,000 by September 30, 2019.

San Diego County Credit Union was the presenting sponsor of the Live Well San Diego 5K, held in partnership with the San Diego Blood Bank. The run was held on July 30 at the County Administration Center, Waterfront Park. Proceeds benefit the San Diego Blood Bank.

The San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy (SDRVC), chosen as a charity of choice by the Pacific Beach Buffalo Exchange, has received a donation of nearly $400 through Buffalo’s “Tokens for Bags®” giving program. Every six months, each of the Buffalo Exchange stores across the country selects three organizations such as the Conservancy to participate in the Tokens for Bags program.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma San Diego/Hawaii Chapter announced Ryan Melendez and Nicole Matthews as the 2017 LLS Man & Woman of the Year. Together Melendez and Matthews raised more than $425,000 in 10 weeks and raised the most funds out of eight candidates competing. All money raised during the campaign will benefit local blood cancer research and patient support services.

11th Annual Holes for Heroes Golf Tournament and Military Appreciation

The San Diego Downtown Breakfast Rotary Foundation is hosting its 11th Annual Holes for Heroes Golf Tournament and Military Appreciation on September 15 at the Lomas Santa Fe Country Club. Special honorees this year are WWll veterans and families of those who lost their lives. Some of the charities to receive funds are Freedom Dogs, Honor Flight San Diego, Armed Services YMCA, Homefront San Diego, and USO/San Diego Neil Ash Airport Center. Don Willis, Chair of San Diego Downtown Breakfast Rotary Club’s Holes for Heroes event, said “The tournament is a great opportunity to support an important cause, enjoy an excellent golf course and spend a day honoring the men and women of the military who make the ultimate commitment of Service Above Self.” Sponsors include Wells Fargo/Private Bank, ViaSat, Sycuan Casino, and Barney & Barney.

San Diego Habitat for Humanity in partnership with Reality Income Corporation

Reality Income Corporation partnered with San Diego Habitat for Humanity to build 11 homes in Logan Heights for ownership. The partnership with Habitat includes a donation of $100,000 and 150 employee volunteers who helped build the walls of homes in the first phase. The activities of this project were a part of Realty Income’s continued philanthropic efforts, and supported Habitat for Humanity’s affordable homeownership program in Logan Heights.

SDG&E and San Diego Harley-Davidson is sponsoring the inaugural SDRides4ALZ, a 100-mile community motorcycle ride to raise awareness and funds for families impacted by Alzheimer’s disease and to help advance research for a cure. All donations will benefit Alzheimer’s San Diego’s programs and services in San Diego County.

New Children’s Museum

The New Children’s Museum was awarded the Environmental Champions Grant from SDG&E for $25,000. In addition to providing support for the museum’s annual benefit, the grant will fund two key museum programs: the Garden Project, the museum’s organic outdoor garden, and programming in the Innovators LAB, the museum’s makerspace that targets children ages 6-13 and provides opportunities to experiment with a variety of ideas, materials, and hands-on techniques.
