12th Annual Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon

On September 10, Helen Woodward Animal Center held its 12th Annual Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon at Dog Beach Del Mar. Blue Buffalo was the presenting sponsor for the event, which raised $80,000 going towards helping orphan pets. Helen Woodward took in 64 animals displaced by Hurricane Harvey, which center staff refer to as “the Texans”. They are receiving care and medical treatment from the center before going up for adoption.

The Fab Four Concert is being held on September 30 at the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe. Funds raised go to the continued development of the on-site dental clinic at the Hospital Infantil de las Californias. The funds will also support the Hospital’s “Programa de Apoyo a Pacientes Indigentes” and foundation operations. The humanitarian hospital provides care for children from the “mega-region” of San Diego County, Baja California, and beyond.

LUV Gala

The St. Paul’s Senior Services and Love Uniting Volunteers (LUV) Gala was held on August 19 at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort. The Gala’s 2017 theme was “The LUV Boat” and raised $240,000 to benefit enhancements for the John A. McColl Health Center. “We’ve seen the positive impact St. Paul’s has on the communities they serve,” said Chip Olson, Gala Committee Chair.

On September 9, San Diego Botanic Garden’s annual Gala in the Garden, A Night in Nature, was held, and $300,000 was donated towards the fund-a-need in support of the Dickinson Family Education Conservatory. The new facility is under construction and will open in 2018. The funds raised completed the $5.3 million campaign. Another $200,000 was raised to help cover the event costs. Ann Hunter-Welborn and David Welborn were recognized with the 2017 Paul Ecke, Jr. Award. They were recognized for their generosity to the community.

6th Annual Gold Shield Gala

The 6th Annual Gold Shield Gala was held at the U.S. Grant Hotel on September 9. “Rhapsody in Blue” raised $400,000 for the San Diego Police Foundation to help ensure that police officers have what they need to do their jobs safely and with excellence. Marco Polo, Inc. was the presenting sponsor. Other sponsors included Wells Fargo; Sycuan; Jenny Craig, who was honorary chair; California Bank & Trust; and Anderson Plumbing Heating & Air.

Steve Weatherford at Feeding San Diego

Feeding San Diego raised $251,638, the equivalent of one million meals, to help children in San Diego facing summer food insecurity. Through the Fuel for Summer campaign, kids and families received the nutrition they needed to live healthy and productive lives. Support was given by several celebrities, including former NFL Super Bowl Champion Steve Weatherford.

The 31st Annual Fur Ball Gala was held on September 9 at the San Diego Humane Society Gaines Street location. Jeffrey Strauss of Pamplemousse Grille prepared the dinner and entertainment was provided by Haute Chili. The event raised $800,000 to support the animals and programs of SDHS. Major event sponsors included Petco, the Petco Foundation, Purina, VCA Animal Hospitals, EDCO Disposal Corporation, the Richard Woltman Foundation, and Scott and Susie Tietjen.

31st Annual Fur Ball Gala

The 7th Annual AimLoan.com San Diego Blues Festival was held on September 9 at Embarcadero Marina Park North. The event raised $485,000 for San Diego Food Bank’s hunger-relief programs. The festival was founded by AimLoan.com’s founder and president, Vince Kasperick. In addition to AimLoan.com, Baker Electric Solar and BCS was a sponsor. Volunteers at the event collected thousands of pounds in food donations from attendees.
