James Y. Chan pledged $500,000 that was matched through the University of California San Diego’s Presidential Match for Endowed Chairs. “With his gift, Dr. Chan has created a lasting legacy that will help us to better understand health, illness and healing issues throughout the world,” said UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep Khosla. Thomas J. Csordas has been appointed the inaugural holder of the Dr. James Y. Chan Presidential Chair for Global Health in the Division of Social Sciences.­­­­­

On June 20, AleSmith Brewing Company hosted its first  “AleSmith Mr. Padre 5.5K” paying tribute to the late Tony Gwynn on the one-year anniversary of his passing. All funds raised will be used to kick start a campaign to build a Tony Gwynn Museum at AleSmith’s new facility. The Museum will support the Tony and Alicia Gynn Foundation by featuring ultra-rare memorabilia and artifacts collected by the Gwynn family over Tony’s baseball career. Sponsors included JBA Sports, GraphicLab Tees, San Diego Private Bank, A&G Collision Center, Taylor Guitars and Ballard Spahr.

The 2015 Man & Woman of the Year Grand Finale Gala benefiting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society San Diego/Hawaii Chapter was held on June 13 at Estancia La Jolla. Candidates spent 10 weeks to raise $400,000 for blood cancer research, education and advocacy. Nine candidates were honored for their dedication and achievements. The 2015 Man of the Year was David Salinas and the 2015 Woman of the Year was Shannon Foster.

Meals-on-Wheels Greater San Diego received a $5,000 grant from Meals on Wheels America for its participation in the 13th Annual March for Meals campaign. This year’s grants were funded by Subaru of America and its seventh annual “Share the Love” event, during which Subaru donated $250 to the owner’s choice of participating charities for every new vehicle purchased or leased.

STAR/PAL Making Changes Graduation Celebration was held on June 16 honoring 15 high school seniors for outstanding leadership and for being first in their families to go to college, with scholarships. 10 of the 15 graduates are recipients of full scholarships to UCSD. The Making Changes Program is a year-round leadership program that brings youth, law enforcement, and collaborative partners together for a civic engagement based curriculum, designed to empower inner-city youth to make positive life choices.

On July 3, The 4 Girls Phenomenon performed under the stars at Moonlight Amphitheatre in Vista to raise funds for the Moonlight Cultural Foundation. Proceeds support arts education programs for youth and adults, to foster engagement of new audiences and increase student/educator participation in the artistic process. The musical stars from Broadway, TV, film and recordings are Andrea McArdle, Maureen McGovern, Randy Graff, and Faith Prince.

Downtown San Diego Partnership

Downtown San Diego Partnership hosted its annual golf tournament on June 19 at the Coronado Municipal Golf Course. Makers Quarter Presented by L2HP was the Title Sponsor.  A total of $57,370 was raised to support programs that create a vibrant and world class urban center for all San Diegans. Winners included Cox Communications in 1st Place, Swinerton Builders in 2nd and Carrier Johnson + CULTURE in 3rd place.

Higgs Fletcher & Mack gave a $4,500 Diversity Scholarship to Marisol Ornelas, a third year Cal Western School of Law student. This is the third year HFM has provided the Diversity Scholarship to a Cal Western student.

The Arc of San Diego is celebrating the kickoff of construction at The Sol and Ruth Gerber Family Center. Renovations to the center in Chula Vista will ensure the continuation of life-changing services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who attend programs at the center. In recognition of their $1 million gift, the center formerly known as Starlight Center will be renamed The Sol and Ruth Gerber Family Center.
