Ocean Discovery Institute Bubble Up! Gala a Success

Ocean Discovery Institute held their annual Bubble Up! Gala on Aug. 22 at the Omni La Costa Resort. They announced that their $15 million Living Lab capital campaign had reached completion with a $150,000 contribution coming from the California State Coastal Conservancy. The $380,000 raised by Gala attendees are used to continue Ocean Discovery’s transformative education programs. With the creation of the Living Lab facility opening in 2017, the tuition-free science education programs will expand to reach 20,000 students in City Heights.

La Jolla Playhouse was awarded a $100,000 grant from the David C. Copley Foundation. The funds will allow the Playhouse to launch a Military Outreach Initiative for the 2015/2016 season. The first Playhouse Military Night event was held on July 7 as the Playhouse welcomed members of Wounded Warriors from all five military branches. “We’ve made inroads with accessible tickets through our Blue Star Theatres collaboration but this grant will allow us to provide even more resources to military families,” said Playhouse Managing Director Michael Rosenberg.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. has awarded a $75,000 grant to Workshops for Warriors. The funds will be used to assist in efforts to train veterans transitioning into civilian life with job skills and placement. Workshops for Warriors provide veterans and injured vets with training in CNC machining, CAD/CAM programming, and welding.

Zodiac Pool Systems is launching  a “Pay-it-Forward” campaign in addition to hosting an internal Red Cross Blood Drive that was held on Aug. 6. The Providing Alternative Tomorrows with Hope (P.A.T.H.) program has spearheaded the “Pay-it-Forward” program. The campaign to promote acts of kindness within both the company and the community started on Aug. 3 with Zodiac employees being encouraged to perform a good deed for a fellow employee. The campaign was expanded beyond the company and into the community on Aug. 17.

The Hadassah Foundation has awarded a $35,200 grant to Girls Give Back, a Jewish Family Service of San Diego program. The funds will help cover the operating expenses of the program for the next year. Girls Give Back addresses challenges faced by young Jewish women in San Diego by engaging them in meaningful, self-directed, and ongoing service learning and leadership development activities.

In keeping with AT&T’s commitment to water conservation, AT&T offered a bill credit of $5/month for 6 months when customers signed up for AT&T Digital Life and a Water Detection package. AT&T is also making a contribution to support California water conservation efforts based on customer purchases. A minimum of $50,000 and a maximum of $100,000 will be contributed to The Nature Conservancy. The contribution is based on $10 for each new purchase of a Digital Life product from Aug. 18 to Sept. 17.

Monarch School raised $5,000 at its ArtFest on Aug. 15. The event featured music and art auction with student and community art, student designed fashion apparel, food trucks and concession sales.

Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation Chairman Cody Martinez presented the Sweetwater Valley Little League team a $20,000 check on behalf of the tribe. The donation helped cover expenses for the team to go to the final rounds of the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA. “Sycuan is more than happy to continue the Kumeyaay spirit of giving and continue to be a strong partner in the community,” said Chairman Martinez. This is the second donation Sycuan made to the team. The tribe also provided bus transportation for the family members of the players to the Aug. 15 game.

Comedy for Cause

Comedy for a Cause was held on Aug. 15 at the San Diego Yacht Club. It was hosted by Honor Flight San Diego and raised $81,000 to send World War II veterans on the organization’s October 2015 Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. to visit the memorials dedicated to their sacrifice. The Los Angeles-based comedy troupe “Veterans of Comedy” headlined the event.
