The Sanford Education Center at National University recognized philanthropist Conrad Prebys with the Humanitarian of the Year award and Dr. David Lorden, Superintendent of Lakeside Union School District with the Educator of the Year award. The first recipient of the Humanitarian award, T. Denny Sanford, presented the award to Prebys. President Dr. Michael Cunningham presented the Educator award to Dr. Lorden at the Anniversary Celebration on Sept. 30. During the celebration, elementary schools teachers throughout the country were also recognized for their dedication to the vision of the Sanford Harmony program.

The Timken Museum of Art is celebrating its 50th Anniversary with the Orange & Black Ball being held on October 30. The evening begins with cocktails at the Timken and followed by dinner and entertainment at the Prado Grand Ballroom. Proceeds from the event support year-round free admission and extensive art education and outreach programs of the Timken.

Patrons of the Prado donated $10,000 to 11 Balboa Park museums and institutions with funding it received from the Masterpiece Gala held on July 18. Among those receiving grants were San Diego Museum of Art, Museum of Photographic Arts, The Old Globe, Mingei International Museum and Timken Museum of Art. Donors to the gala included Douglas and Geniya Manchester, Arlene and Richard Esgate, Jack McGrory, James Rogers and Michael Casey.

Workshops for Warriors received a $50,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation. “It costs $10,000 to train a student every semester. These grants directly support our mission to prepare veterans and wounded warriors for advanced manufacturing careers,” said Hernan` Luis y Prado, Founder of Workshop for Warriors.

Seven San Diego Legal Professionals raised $40,000 at the 8th Annual “Couture For A Cause” fundraiser held on Sept. 24 at Hall of Champions. The proceeds will benefit Voices for Children ad STAR/PAL. The event was hosted by the San Diego Chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators in partnership with the International Legal Technology Association, Legal Marketing Association Southern California Chapter, San Diego La Raza Lawyers Association, Legal Secretaries Association, Paralegal Association and the Tom Homann Law Association.

Center for Community Solutions received a $20,000 grant from The Mary Kay Foundation. In observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, the Foundation awarded grants to 150 domestic violence shelters. CCS will use the grant funding to provide a bilingual therapist. “This grant will increase our language capacity to provide bilingual and bicultural trauma specific therapeutic services to our Spanish speaking shelter and counseling clients,” said Verna Griffin-Tabor, Executive Director of CCS.

Alliance Healthcare Foundation announced a collaboration between Mental Health Systems and Mountain Health & Community Services as the recipient of its $1 million Innovation Initiative (12). With the Innovation Initiative, MHS and MHCS will integrate primary care into behavioral healthcare to serve the seriously mentally ill. Untreated physical health problems in the seriously mentally ill result in more costly emergency care. With the collaboration of MHS and MHCS called North Inland Family Medicine, their goal is to reverse this trend.

San Diego Foundation Concert

San Diego Foundation Concert

The San Diego Foundation held a charity benefit concert with Red Hot Chili Peppers on Sept. 27 at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach. The sold out concert raised $600,000 which will be awarded to organizations that focus on youth performing arts education. Those receiving grants are ARTS – A Reason to Survive, Heartbeat Music Academy, San Diego Young Artists Music Academy and Silverlake Conservatory of Music. “This was a rare opportunity for San Diegans to enjoy an intimate evening with a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band and feel good about giving back to their community,” said Kathryn Mead, CEO and President of San Diego Foundation.

The Emilio Nares Foundation held its 12th annual “Harvest For Hope” on Sept. 13 at the San Diego Central Library. In addition to the $190,000 raised to fund programs that provide transportation for families of children being treated for cancer, an anonymous donor gifted a van for ENF’s flagship program “Ride With Emilio”. The Corrao Group and D.W. Hearst Jr. Foundation were honored at the event.

Mama’s Kitchen held a 25th Anniversary Celebration on Sept. 26 at the Illumina Campus. La Mesa resident Claudia Sandoval, Fox’s “MasterChef” Season Six winner attended the Farm to Table Celebration. The goal was to raise $300,000 towards the organization’s annual food budget. Mama’s Kitchen  delivers meals free of charge to men, women and children affected by AIDS or cancer.
