Luau and Legends of Surfing Invitational

The 22nd Annual Luau and Legends of Surfing Invitational was held on August 9. For the 8th consecutive year Pfizer, Inc. was the presenting sponsor. Carl June, MD received the Rell Sunn Award which honors the memory of Hawaiian surfer and longtime Luau supporter, for his pioneering work to enhance the promise of cancer immunotherapy. The $288,500 raised goes to support research and patient care at Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health. Musical headliner Tim Flannery performed and Giuseppe Fine Catering served the luncheon.

Art in the Village

The Carlsbad Village Association’s Art in the Village was held on Aug. 9 with 95 local and regional artists present for the event. Artist demos and instruction took place throughout the day while attendees browsed exhibits and listened to live music.

CUSO Financial Services and Sorrento Pacific Financial hosted a “Lead Forward!” 5K Fun Walk/Run on July 26. The 5K kicked off the companies’ 17th Annual Conference. All of the registration fees benefited the Wounded Warrior Project which helps to foster the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded service members.

Supporting America’s Finest

The Supporting America’s Finest campaign was held on Aug 6 in downtown San Diego. SDPD Appreciation Night raised $10,000 between GoFundMe and direct contributions towards a $150,000 fundraising goal. The campaign encourages San Diegans to show their support for America’s Finest, the San Diego Police Department. Mayor Kevin Faulconer addressed the group saying “Without our officers, I know there is little foundation and hope for opportunities for a brighter day.”

The 10th Annual ArtWalk NTC Liberty Station sponsored by Mission Federal Credit Union was held on Aug. 15 and 16. Artists from throughout the West and Mexico displayed their works and offered one-of-a-kind art for sale to those in attendance.

The Living Coast Discovery Center raised $96,000 at its annual Farm to Bay event on Aug. 8. The funds will be used to support coastal wildlife, education and sustainability programs at the Living Coast. Sponsors included SDG&E, UT Aerospace Systems-Aerostructures, Unified Port of San Diego, Mission Federal Credit Union, BAE Systems, AT&T, Waitt Foundation and Wells Fargo.

Culinary Couture, presented by Fashion Week San Diego and Harrah’s Resort Southern California, is being held on Aug. 29 at Harrah’s. Five Southern California chefs will be serving up five specially-crafted courses in spired by select fashion capitals.

City Ballet of San Diego held its annual Donor Appreciation Reception at the home of Claire Reiss in La Jolla on Aug. 9. Prima Ballerina Paloma Herrera of the American Ballet Theatre was the evening’s special guest.

Jewel ball

Las Patronas celebrated the 69th Jewel Ball, Magnifique, at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club on Aug. 9. “Jewel Ball is a thank you to all the supporters of Las Patronas. Through their generosity, funds are raised to support nine major beneficiary nonprofit charities and many more minor beneficiaries in the coming year,” said 2015 Jewel Ball Chair, Cari Massaad. This year’s Major beneficiaries include Alpha Project for the Homeless, Arc of San Diego, Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego, Living Coast Discovery Center, Mountain Health and Community Services, Old Globe Theatre, The Preuss School – UCSD University of San Diego and San Diego Zoo Global. 

The 38th Haute with Heart Fashion Show, I Love Fashion was held on Aug. 15 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront San Diego. Sponsors included Barona Resort & Casino, MARCOA Publishing, Kaiser Permanente, San Diego Gas & Electric, Lundy Insurance Services and Sycuan Casino. Net proceeds of $116,000 will be used for the Aquatics Program and the Arts Program.
