Geisel Library Receives Gift for Renovation

Audrey Geisel donated $3 million toward the renovation of the University of California, San Diego Geisel Library. Geisel’s gift will be used to renovate and update the entry level of Geisel Library which opened in 1972. The Library was named in honor of Audrey and her late husband, Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel, in recognition of a major gift from Audrey Geisel. “It gives me great joy to help ensure that Geisel Library will continue to attract and fuel students, scholars, and community members who are passionate about learning,” said Geisel.

Shirley and Cheryl - LUV Gala

The 2015 LUV Gala was held on July 11 at the St. Paul’s Plaza. The Gala celebrated the 55th anniversary of St. Paul’s Senior Services. Bill and Barbara McColl were honored for their support of St. Paul’s. All of the proceeds benefited St. Paul’s Plaza, a senior living community opening early summer that will focus on family unity with innovative lifestyle amenities atat appeal to residents, families, and the Chula Vista community.

The San Diego County Medical Society Foundation is raising $10,000 in 29 days via social media. Due to a matching grant from the Parker Foundation, and support from SDCMS Foundation’s Board of Directors, every $1 raised online before Aug. 10, will translate into $4. The funds will support efforts to coordinate pro bono specialty healthcare services for low-income, uninsured San Diegans.

Cari Massaad - Jewel Ball

The 69th Annual Jewel Ball, Magnifique, is being held on Aug. 8 at La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. “Magnifique will celebrate our tradition of helping the San Diego nonprofit community,” said 2015 Jewel Ball Chair Cari Massaad. Major beneficiaries of this year’s Jewel Ball include: Alpha Project for the Homeless, Arc of San Diego, Old Globe Theatre, The Preuss School – UCSD and Living Coast Discovery Center.

The 20th Annual Brian Schultz Memorial Golf Classic will be held on Aug. 1 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. Proceeds will benefit research at University of California, San Diego Moores Cancer Center. The tournament is in honor of Brian Schultz, who lost a sudden and brief battle with cancer at the age of 27. The goal is to raise $100,000 to help fuel discoveries that translate into more effective cancer treatments with a portion going to help students affected by cancer who attend San Diego State University, Schultz’s alma mater.

Union Bank honored the United States military on July 18 at the Padres vs. Rockies game by donating 500 Padres tickets to local military men and women. The bank also kicked off the Union Bank Financial Literacy program at the Padres vs. Giants game on July 21. Participants received a ticket to a Padres game, and Union Bank made a $20,000 donation to the Padres Foundation for Children.

Seacrest Village Retirement Communities hosted The 211 Club Annual Patron Recognition Party on July 12 at Pamplemousse Grille in Solana Beach. All funds raised go to the Resident Assistance Fund and will go directly to meet the housing and care needs of residents of Seacrest Village.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America is hosting the Pacific Region Military Youth of the Year fundraiser at the Manchester Grand Hyatt on July 31. The winner, a Club member serving on a military installation who has overcome enormous odds and demonstrated exceptional character and accomplishments, will be announced that evening. To earn this honor, Club youth advance through local, state and regional competitions. The program is presented by Disney and Toyoto is the Signature Sponsor. Others include University of Phoenix and the Taco Bell Foundation for Teens. Sony Electronics is a Diamond Sponsor.

The Farmers Insurance Open has been scheduled for January 28 - 31, 2016. The Century Club San Diego and FedEX Cup are sponsoring the tournament.
