The Barney & Barney Foundation is presenting the 5th annual Rock the Foundation benefit concert featuring The Pine Mountain Logs. The event is being held on Sept. 18 at the Paddock at the Del Mar

Fairgrounds. The Foundation was created in 2009 to celebrate Barney & Barney’s 100 year anniversary and to formalize the tradition of giving back to the community. Funds raised are awarded to non-profit organizations in the communities where they have offices. The 2014 grant recipients in San Diego are ElderHelp of San Diego, Outdoor Outreach, Community Resource Center, Promises2Kids and Girls on the Run San Diego.

Symphony at the Salk – Conrad Prebys & Debbie Turner

The 19th annual Symphony at Salk was held on Aug. 23. The San Diego Symphony was conducted by Thomas Wilkins and Matthew Morrison was the guest artist. Salk President Bill Brody performed “Rhapsody in Blue”, accompanied by the orchestra. The evening netted $820,000 for Salk Institute which supports wide-ranging scientific inquiries. Title Sponsors were Conrad Prebys and Debra Turner as well as Audrey Geisel. Other sponsors included Joan and Irwin Jacobs, Liz Keadle, Martina & Daniel Lewis, Becky and Ralph O’Connor, Pfizer and Darlene Marcos Shiley.

Jennifer Greenfield and Haeyoung Kong Tang – Voices for Children

Voices for Children are holding its twelfth annual Starry Starry Night on Sept. 13 at the San Diego Polo Club. The Constellation Sponsor and Co-chair is Haeyoung Kong Tang. Andromeda Sponsors are Cox, Farrell Family Foundation and Qualcomm. Orion Sponsors include The Rose Foundation, Genentech, Hughes Marino and Jennifer and Richard Greenfield (Co-chairs). All proceeds benefit the foster children of San Diego County. The goal of VFC is to ensure that all foster children’s needs are met – in the courtroom, in the classroom, and in the community.

Sharp Grossmont Hospice

Celebrating Life Benefit Dinner and Regatta was held on Aug. 22 & 23. The Friday night dinner was held at the Hotel del Coronado and the Saturday Regatta at the Coronado Yacht Club. The 12th Annual Sharp HospiceCare Benefit Regatta netted $350,000. Hosted in partnership with Coronado Yacht Club and Cortez Racing Association, the weekend event supports Sharp’s Homes for Hospice campaign, an initiative to build hospice homes in San Diego. The Shea Family was the Title Sponsor with their $25,000 contribution. Honorary Commodore Sponsors were Virginia Napierskie, Elmcroft Senior Living and Sodexo Health Care Services. Suzi K. Johnson, Vice President, Sharp HospiceCare, said “As we prepare to open our third hospice home in San Diego’s South Bay, Sharp HospiceCare continues to focus on its mission to deliver compassionate and comprehensive end-of-life care for those in our community who need it.”

Holes for Heroes – San Diego Breakfast Rotary Foundation

Holes for Heroes – San Diego Breakfast Rotary Foundation

The 8th annual Military Appreciation event “Holes for Heroes” golf tournament is being held on Sept. 19 at the Lomas Santa Fe Country Club. The tournament is followed by dinner, auction and military recognition. All of the proceeds are donated to charities that help veterans and hurting Heroes, their children and families, and other charities supported by the San Diego Downtown Breakfast Rotary Foundation.

The Torrey Pines Kiwanis’ La Jolla Festival of the Arts raised $42,000 at the 28th Annual Festival held last June. The funds will be allocated to San Diego adaptive sports and recreation programs for 2015. The Torrey Pines Kiwanis has entered into an agreement with San Diego Magazine as a key partner in producing the 29th Annual LJFA. The event is currently being planned for June 20-21 at UCSD Warren Field. “San Diego Magazine is excited to be working with Torrey Pines Kiwanis and we look forward to a very successful Festival in 2015,” said Jim Fitzpatrick, Publisher and CEO of San Diego Magazine.

Three health centers who are members of the Council of Community Clinics, each received a $250,000 grant from The Health Resources and Services Administration. Borrego Health, Vista Community Clinic and Clinicas de Salud del Pueblo are the recipients of the grants. The funding, made available by the HRSA Patient Centered Medical Home – Facility Improvement (P-FI) Grant Program, supports health centers’ efforts to make facility enhancements through alteration and renovation or construction.  These enhancements will improve patient access to services and quality of care using the Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) model of care.
