The Downtown San Diego Partnership welcomed Comic-Con 2013 on the first day. Over 130,000 people from all around the world gathered in Downtown San Diego for the four days which generated millions of dollars in revenues for local businesses. The event generated 20 tons of trash on surrounding city streets. The Downtown Partnership’s Clean & Safe staffers were tasked with hauling all that debris away.

UC San Diego’s The Zone received $5,000 from Whole Foods Market. The grocery store donated five percent of net proceeds from sales on Apr. 10 to promote student wellness at UC San Diego. The funds were used for support programming in The Zone, a student lounge that offers free programs to help students flourish with healthy lifestyles.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation San Diego’s Roll Out The Barrel raised $100,000 at the event on July 13 held at Humphrey’s By The Bay. Sponsors included Sycuan Casino, Kool Party Rentals, Ashford University and Ben Bridge Jewelers. The money will be used to grant wishes to children with life threatening illnesses.

Old California Restaurant Row is the official sponsor for the monthly ArtWalk & Car Show in San Marcos. On Aug. 4, 30 vending North County artists will showcase their works ranging from paintings, pastels, digital illustrations or photography, sculpture and hand-crafted jewelry. The car show includes race and sports cars, hot rods, classics and highly modified drag racers.

Meals-on-Wheels Greater San Diego raised $200,000 at its 4th Annual Chef Appetizer Challenge and Superhero Soiree at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel on July 20. The funds raised ensure an Diego County homebound seniors receive the critical support they need to keep them well-nourished and at home. John Pernicano and Subaru of America were honored for their longtime support of Meals on Wheels.  Ford Motor Company presented a $31,500 check for the third year in a row to pay for the organization’s van gas for a year. B of I Federal Bank was honored as Superhero Extraordinaire for their $15,000 sponsorship.

Jack in the Box Foundation sponsored Man Up California campaign in San Diego for Big Brothers Big Sisters. The organization experienced a 50% increase in male inquiries during 2013 as a result of this program. Other fundraising events included a Golf Marathon raising $165,000 and the 5th Annual Phil’s Big BBG which raised $72,000. The San Diego Young Professionals Committee will present the 9th Annual Chocolate & Vino in partnership with The University Club Charity Classic to be held on Aug. 9 to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters, MDA Augie’s Quest and the EPC Foundation.

The San Diego Foundation’s 38th Annual Meeting was held on July 17 at the Chula Vista Bayfront Park. The event marked the launch of new branding for The San Diego Foundation and the the two critical centers it is home to, the San Diego Center for Charitable Giving and the San Diego Center for Civic Engagement.
