San Diego Humane Society and SPCA is holding its 27th Annual Fur Ball on Aug.17 at the Central Campus on Gaines Street. Paul Jolly, Executive Director of Petco Foundation is being honored for his commitment and dedication to animals and to the programs of San Diego Humane Society. The evening includes a program celebrating the animals and programs of the Humane Society accompanied by a gourmet meal prepared by Chef Jeffrey Strauss of Pamplemousse Grille.

Padres Reading Corner

Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera participated in the Padres Reading Corner presented by Ashton University on July 11 at the National City Library branch, one of five reading corner events throughout the season. Cabrera read to a group of children, and presented a $1,000 donation to the San Diego County Library on behalf of the Padres Foundation and Ashford University.

Bourbon Street in University Heights is hosting Mama’s Kitchen’s 18th Annual Wine Tasting Event on Aug. 15. The event is presented by Revivals with proceeds going directly to the daily operations of Mama’s Kitchen to deliver three meals a day to men, women and children affected by AIDS/HIV or cancer. Alberto Cortés, executive director, Mama’s Kitchen said, “The event provides a fun and relaxing opportunity for attendees to learn about how we provide life-sustaining nutrition to our neighbors battling AIDS or cancer. We are thankful to all who attend and support our mission.”

Seacrest Village Retirement Communities hosted its annual 211 Club Patron Recognition on July 14 at the Solana Beach home of Jeffrey Strauss. Supporters of Seacrest gathered to celebrate their commitment of the charitable mission of the Homes.

The fourth annual Miracle Babies’ “Casino Royale” will be held on Aug. 10 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla. Sponsors include Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns, David Smotrich and Stephen Cox. Proceeds from the evening will help provide education, support, and financial assistance to families with newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit so that families can focus on the health of their newborn.

Soda & Swine raised $1,807 in five days for the Copley-Price Family YMCA in Normal Heights. The money will help fund the building of the new family center in City Heights.

The Public Service Announcement featuring San Diego Chargers Philip Rivers for Voices for Children won two Emmy Awards. The PSA won for directing and for documentary short subject. Another PSA featuring Rivers is now being created with Rivers being filmed in Tidelands Park.

Ryan Matthews Charity Golf Tournament

Max the Cocker Spaniel from Point Loma Won the Top Dog Prize as Captain America in The Patio on Lamont Street’s First Annual Canine Comic Contest on July 13. The event raised $500 for the San Diego Humane Society.

Project Walk held its 2013 Move With Music on July 14 at the Belly Up Bar. Sponsors included Mi-Med Supply Co., Experea HealthCare, Homewood Suites, Hilton, Del Mar Thoroughbred Club and The Crossings. The Ryan Matthews Charity Golf Tournament is being held on July 22 at Maderas Golf Club in Poway. Proceeds will benefit Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego and the Trish and Ryan Matthews Door of Hope Chest at The Salvation Army Door of Hope.
