KPBS Celebrates! The 5th Anniversary Gala
San Diego Charity News for April 13
KPBS hosted their 5th annual KPBS Celebrates! Event on Mar. 28 at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines. Ken Kramer, Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement, and the Beyster Family, Hall of Fame Visionaries, were inducted into the KPBS Hall of Fame. The $70,000 raised will support the station’s programming and service to the community. Sponsors were CARS, Jackson Design & Remodeling, Scripps, Manpower and Cymer.
The Boys and Girls Foundation provided a $75,000 grant that will provide two new vans for the transportation program. The first one is in service at the Bob Payne Family Branch in National City. The presentation was made at the Branch’s Annual Dinner, which was held on Mar. 28.
Women in Blue Luncheon
The 5th Annual Women in Blue Luncheon was held on Mar. 25 at the Marriott La Jolla Hotel. The honorees are: SDPD Captain Anastasia Smith; SDPD Program Manager of Information Services Chris Haley/ and SDPD Lieutenant and SWAT Executive Officer, Tina Williams. The $70,000 raised will support the San Diego Police Foundation’s efforts to fund equipment, training and outreach programs for the police department. Verizon Wireless was the presenting sponsor. Other major sponsors included Cox Communications, ESET North America, Mission Federal Credit Union, Andersen Plumbing and Heating and Air, and the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation.
National Walking Day
The American Heart Association and Union Bank celebrated National Walking Day on Apr. 1.
San Diego County employees and residents were challenged to take 30 minutes of their day to participate in a countywide effort to walk a combined 25 million steps. San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts presented AHA with a proclamation declaring April 1 National Walking Day in San Diego County.
Susan G. Komen San Diego will grant $1.1 million to breast cancer research and breast health services on Apr. 30 at AMN Healthcare. This includes free diagnostic mammograms, life-saving screenings, surgeries, temporary financial aid for living expenses, meal deliveries, education and research for men and women. The funds were raised through Komen’s annual special events and fundraisers. Vista Community Clinic, Jewish Family Services, Mama’s Kitchen and 2-1-1 San Diego are the recipients of the grants.
Grossmont Hospital Foundation Golf Tournament
The Grossmont Hospital Foundation 31st annual Golf Tournament is being held on Apr. 16 at the Sycuan Golf Resort. The tournament will help raise funds to improve health care for the community by increasing hospital capacity, purchasing new technology and supporting programs at sharp Grossmont Hospital. Title sponsors are EDCO Disposal Corporation, Plum Healthcare Group and Ensign Group.
San Diego Opera’s 50th Anniversary Celebration is being held on Apr. 18 beginning with dinner at the University Club. A concert with arias, duets, ensembles and choruses with the San Diego Symphony follows. Several international stars will be featured. The 50th Anniversary Celebration Concert Presenting Sponsor is US Bank and Sycuan Casino is the 50th Anniversary Celebration Sponsor.
Prayers for Kylie Golf Tournament
The Kylie Rowand Foundation is holding its Prayers for Kylie 2nd Annual Golf Tournament on Apr. 13 at Steele Canyon Golf Club. The event, presented by Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, will raise money to help fund clinical trials and provide lifesaving treatment for children suffering from pediatric cancer. The Foundation was created in honor of two year old Kylie who passed away in February.
Girl Scouts San Diego’s Cool Women 2015will be held on Apr. 14 at the Del Mar Country Club. Eleven women will be presented and recognized for there exemplary leadership and service to the community. Del Norte High School junior Elena Crespo will be presented as the 2015 Cool Girl. Event proceeds will help support program outreach for girls in schools in low-income neighborhoods, homeless shelters and the Girls Rehabilitation Facility.
