The International Bipolar Foundation “Behind the Mask; Changing the Game of Stigma” was held on May 9 at the Estancia Hotel. The IMAGINE Award was presented to Chamique & Muffin and Dr. Lardon received the HOPE Award. The $450,000 raised will support a College Program which addresses college age youth who experience mental health issues while in school. Sponsors included Muffy Walker and John Reed, Conrad Prebys and Debbie Turner, Andrew Viterbi, Mossy Automobile Group, Sunovian and Q2Insights.

Friends and supporters of United Through Reading were in Washington, D.C. on May 20 for the 2nd Annual Tribute to Military Families to celebrate families who have forged meaningful connections through the read aloud experience. Juan M. Garcia III, Assistant Secretary of the Navy was the Keynote Speaker. BAE System was the title sponsor for the second year. ADI, Booz Allen Hamilton, Cobham, Engility, GE, Google, Huntington Ingalls, Navy Federal Credit Union, were also sponsors.

Tri-City Hospital Foundation’s fourth annual Fashion That Heals was held on May 2 and raised over $100,000. The funds will support expanding and updating the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Tri-City Medical Center which is the only Level III location in north San Diego County. Tri-City doctors, nurses and employees presented fashions on the runway.

United Way’s Women’s Leadership Council Annual Celebration was held on May 14 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. The event’s sponsors were Ashford University and Rancho Bernardo Inn.

The WLC will contribute $145,000 to fund targeted and purposeful initiatives to empower women and support children across San Diego County. The group actively advocates for and engages with the initiatives it funds, frequently volunteering as mentors and tutors for these programs. Other United Way grants include $2 million to four community partnerships that are working collectively to help young San Diegans and their families. These networks were awarded the grants based on their commitment to using a “Collective Impact” framework to solve social issues. “We believe multiple organizations effectively working together can always do better than one,” said United Way President and CEO Kevin Crawford. AT&T, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, GEICO, NASSCO, Solar Turbines and UPS are some of the contributors to the grants.

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation has announced $276,500 in grants to 30 nonprofits focused on providing workforce development and education opportunities in San Diego. These grants are part of BofA’s focus on employment opportunities in San Diego. Those organizations receiving funding include: REBOOT San Diego; Workforce Partnership; Workshops for Warriors; Ocean Discovery Institute; and Second Change.

The Rancho Santa Fe Community Center’s “Run for the Roses” Gala was held on May 15 at the Del Mar Country Club. Major sponsors were The Mikles Family, The Wohlford Family, The Rancho Santa Fe Group at Morgan Stanley and Henebery Whiskey. The Community Sponsors were Wells Fargo – The Private Bank and Latham Watkins. Proceeds support the RSF Community Center, whose mission is to enhance the spirit and benefits of community life through program events and services of enrichment, recreation and outreach for all ages.

Employees from Bridgepoint Education took part in volunteer efforts to commemorate April’s National Volunteer Month with an organization-wide volunteer event called Heroes Day on Apr. 25. Bridgepoint employees teamed up with Ashford employees and Ashford students to volunteer at the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. Volunteers prepared food boxes and backpacks for children and seniors who are at risk of hunger.

The 2nd Annual America on Main Street celebration was held on Main Street in Downtown El Cajon. The purpose of the event is to celebrate the American spirit through the appreciation and respect of the many diverse, ethnic, and historical groups in the community. The event raised $60,000. Premier Sponsors included Parkway Plaza, Donwtown Business Partners, and the Barona, Sycuan, and Viejas Bands of Kumeyaay Nation.
