The 42nd Annual Association of Fundraising Professionals San Diego Chapter National Philanthropy Day Celebration is scheduled for Oct. 28 at Hilton San Diego Bayfront. Bill Littlejohn will serve as the Day’s Chair and Linda Katz will serve as Honoree Awards Chair. “National Philanthropy Day is not just an event to recognize outstanding individuals and organizations, but a unique opportunity to celebrate the power and impact of philanthropy in San Diego.  Every day is philanthropy day in San Diego as the diversity of time, treasure and talents is shared in every part of our community. I’m honored to be chairing National Philanthropy Day 2014,” said Littlejohn, CEO of Sharp Healthcare Foundation.

International Bipolar Foundation hosted “Behind The Mask: Phantom of the Opera Gala” on May 10 at the Estancia La Jolla Hotel. David O. Russell, writer-director of “Silver Linings Playbook,” was honored with the IBPF Hope Award for his efforts to erase the stigma of mental illness, access to treatment and instill hope in families, communities and the nation. Proceeds from the event will benefit programs and support services for people affected by bipolar disorder, as well as public education programs to increase awareness and knowledge of bipolar disorders.

A total of $1.5 million was raised at the 33rd Annual UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center Gala held on Apr. 26 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla’s Aventine. In addition, the funds raised were matched to $3 million by a donor through the Challenge for Jacobs Medical Center, and also matched to $2 million from institutional matches from Chancellor Pradeep Khosla and UC San Diego Health System. With these matches included, the total amount raised exceeded $5 million in support of cancer research, education and care. Proceeds from the gala “SPARK” will support Jacobs Medical Center, including its Hospital for Cancer Care, as well as patient programs at Moores Cancer Center.

University of San Diego honored 10 alumni on Apr. 26 at the 19th Annual Alumni Honors celebration. Alumni were recognized for career achievement, contributions to humanitarian causes, extraordinary athletic success and exemplary service to USD including a San Diego entrepreneur who led the creation of a fund to aid Hurricane Sandy victims.  James  Brennan, CEO of Enlightened Hospitality Group, received the Bishop Charles Francis Buddy Award for contributions to humanitarian causes. Kevin Dooley, founder of USD’s Wine Classic event, received the Mother Rosalie Clifton Hill Award for exemplary service to the university.

One Love San Diego raised $11,000 at “Yoga Glow in the Night,” a charity event benefitting Monarch School. People gathered in the school’s gymnasium to learn about the school and engage in a yoga session. One Love partnered with Fitn, a membership service for various types of workouts. The company is donating $50 for every person who signs up on its website until May 31.

Center for Community Solutions raised $225,000 at its 15th Annual Tea and Tonic event which was held at the Grand Del Mar on Apr. 23. Premier Sponsors were Nordstrom, Sycuan, HD Supply and The California Endowment. Other sponsors included The Patricia & Christopher Weil Family Foundation, The TJX Companies and Club Pilates. The event is held annually during the month of April in conjunction with Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Danielle Tansino, a sexual assault survivor who received healing services from CCS, was presented the Courage Award and Las Patronas was recognized as the CCS Volunteer Organization of the Year.

Scripps Concert for Cancer is being held on May 19 at Humphreys Concerts by the Bay. Presented by Scripps Health, the fourth annual concert will celebrate cancer survivorship. Three-time Grammy Award-winning blues artist Keb’ Mo’ will be the headline entertainer. Proceeds will benefit cancer services and education across the Scripps Health system throughout San Diego County.
