Planned Parenthood held its 50th Anniversary Dinner on May 9 at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel. Dr. Katharine Sheehan received a Lifetime Achievement Award for her 32 years of service at Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest. Sheehan was recognized for her tireless and fierce advocacy for women’s health.  Sarah Weddington, author of The Next 50: A Conversation, was the keynote speaker. Sponsors of the evening included Quest Diagnostics, LabCorp, Kaiser Permanente, accmed+logistics, Elite, Messner Smith Investment Management and PharmPak.

Richard Nares, executive director and co-founder of the Emilio Nares Foundation will complete a 700 mile run on June 1 at 11 a.m. in front of Rady Children’s Hospital.  Richard began his run with a goal of running 700 miles in 30 days to raise $75,000 for the Foundation. Richard and Diane Nares started ENF in 2002 after losing their only son Emilio to cancer in 2000. The flagship service, Ride With Emilio, provides transportation for low-income, underprivileged families and their children with cancer to access their chemotherapy, radiation or other medical appointments.

Wildcoast/Costasalvaje is sponsoring the Baja Bash on June 15 at the Port Pavilion at the Broadway Pier, bringing the best of Baja California to mix with the best of San Diego, celebrating conservational success on both sides of the shared coastline. El Hijo del Santo will be honored as a defender of the ocean and marine life, as well as Javier Plascencia, for leading Baja’s gastronomic revolution. Several chefs from San Diego and Baja will be featured.

Barrio Logan College Institute

Barrio Logan College Institute’s 3rd Annual Celebration is being held on June 5 at the New Children’s Museum. Sponsors of the evening include Walmart, Sycuan, hp, AT&T, Aetna, Kaiser Permante, thrive, SDG&E, Manpower and San Diego Padres. In recognition of BLCI’s 100% success rate of sending first generation students to college, BLCI has been invited to be a key partner in the Chula Vista Promise Neighborhood project.

David Gong was named the 2013 San Diego Man of the Year at the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Annual event on May 11. David Oates came in second raising $38,000, 50% over his original fundraising goal. A total of $330,000 was raised by the 10 men and women who competed. The funds go toward the fight against blood cancers.

Jewish Family Service received a $20,000 grant from Walmart’s Fighting Hunger Together initiative. JFS  is one of Feeding America’s partner agencies located throughout the United States. “With this grant, we will be able to feed hundreds of families in San Diego County,” said Michael Hopkins, CEO of Jewish Family Services.

SDG&E kicked off the annual Environmental Champions initiative, a $1 million charitable giving campaign to support local organizations that focus on engaging and educating young people in the community as stewards of the environment. The event was held on May 1 at SDG&E’s Energy Innovation Center.

KPBS and Union Bank will recognize and pay tribute to sixteen San Diegans from eight local communities during their 15 year partnership. Local Heroes from around San Diego County are individuals who are making a difference in our community. The vision is to inspire and motivate others to explore, respect and celebrate the rich tapestry of diverse people. Local Heroes are individuals, couples, or even a family, who are making a difference by improving his/her or their workplace, profession, neighborhood, community, region and the world.

Makua’s annual fundraiser benefiting Voices for Children’s Court Appointed Special Advocates Program will coincide with their 60th anniversary .The Back to the Beach will be held at the Kona Kai Resort on June 30. Makaua has raised over $1 million to support the CASAs who work for VFC to serve foster children in San Diego’s dependency court system. This year a donor will match-dollar for-dollar- all gifts from new donors or increased gifts from existing Makua donors up to $500,000.
