Ronald McDonald House Charities San Diego raised $166,000 on Red Shoe Day June 24.

Volunteers stood on street corners at major intersections throughout the county during the sixth annual fundraiser. All proceeds help the Ronald McDonald House’s 47-bedroom facility and daytime Family Care Center where families with hospitalized children are cared for. “We operate at full capacity so the donations given today will make a huge difference for the 12,500 family members each year who rely on our Ronald McDonald House for a bit of respite during stressful medical experiences,” said Chuck Day, president and CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego.

On June 24 in Washington, D.C., Junior Achievement USA named the teen entrepreneurs who created the student-run start-up CCA Today from Junior Achievement of San Diego County as winners of the 2015 JA Company of the Year. They beat 14 other teen companies at the national competition with their winning product—an interactive school campus app. Each member of the CCA team will receive a $4,000 scholarship.

Chief deputizes officer – Friends of the Badge

The 15th Annual Friends of the Badge luncheon was held at San Diego Convention Center on June 16. The focus of the event was community-oriented policing. The event raised $126,000 which goes toward funding equipment and training as well as outreach programs to enhance police-community relations. Qualcomm was the Champion Sponsor. Other sponsors included SDG&E, Motorola Solutions, the San Diego Chargers and Guardian Towing.

The San Diego Professionals Against Cancer donated $16,000 to Rady Children’s Hospital to aid in the process to better insert IV’s into small veins and to purchase stretches for the children’s cancer wing. Emilio Nares Foundation also received $5,000 to help provide transportation for children and their families to and from chemotherapy treatments. The Cancer Angels Foundation received a $5,000 donation. This year the group will host its 21st anniversary event on Sept. 18 at the Broadway Pier.

The Carlsbad Charitable Foundation, an affiliate of The San Diego Foundation provided $102,000 in funding to six nonprofit organizations. The grants were announced at the 8th Annual Grant Awards Celebration on June 15. The grants focused on programs which promote healthy lifestyles. Programs funded include Adopt a Stairway with Friends of Cardiff and South Carlsbad State Beaches ($7,500) and  Science in a Satchel Program with Carlsbad Educational Foundation ($17,900).

“The Shirt Off Oscar’s Back” a fundraiser sponsored by Indigo Salon & Spa, in memory of Oscar Melero, a stylist from the salon. The 5th annual charity event included a fashion show and beauty expo raised $4,500 to benefit The Hand Up Youth Food Pantry. Food and beverages were donated by restaurants including Bistro Sixty, Cucina Urbana, Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza and Bread and Cie.

The San Diego Public Library Foundation named the auditorium at the San Diego Central Library The Neil Morgan Auditorium in recognition of his commitment to encouraging constructive dialogue around the betterment of the San Diego region. Morgan was known for his commitment to San Diego civic engagement and editorial prowess as a journalist.

The San Diego Women’s Foundation’s Annual Grants Celebration was held at The Scripps Research Institute. The 15th Anniversary event included an address by Dr. Constance Carroll, Chancellor of the San Diego Community College District. The $172,000 in grants was awarded to organizations that will use the money for programs that focus on community leadership development. Those receiving grants were Center on Policy Initiatives, Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation, Outdoor Outreach and South Bay Community Services.
