The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary Chairs Sherry Ahern, Susie Spanos and Susan Oliver, announced the fourteen women who will be honored at the 2016 Women of Dedication luncheon. The Presentation Reception was held on Nov. 5 at the La Jolla Country Club. The 51st Annual Women of Dedication Luncheon will be held on April 27 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt. The fourteen women will be honored for their service and dedication to the community. Proceeds will benefit Centre City Community Corps and Auxiliary supported Salvation Army programs in San Diego County.

The 53rd Annual Gourmet Dinner was held on Oct. 29 at the Hyatt Regency  La Jolla at Aventine. Peter Farrell was honored as Person of the Year and highlighted Tony Jackson, retired US Marine Corps General and BBBS of SDC board member. A total of $488,000 was raised to support the efforts to reach more children in need and create more life changing matches.  Sponsors included Andrews, Lagasse, Branch & Bell who hosted the cocktail party. Other sponsors included PIRCH and NRG.

Susan G. Komen held the 19th Annual Race for the Cure 5k and 1 mile walk/run in Balboa Park to raise awareness and funds for the fight against breast cancer. The event raised $1.3 million which will go toward Komen San Diego to provide free breast cancer services and support. Presenting sponsors were Hologic, Jerome’s Furniture Store, Ralphs and Food for Less. Platinum sponsors were Chevron and Anderson Plumbing, Heating and Air.

The Aston-Brooks Gala, the annual fundraiser for the San Diego Human Dignity Foundation was held on Nov. 7 starring Broadway star Andrea McArdle. Three individuals making a difference in San Diego and across the globe were honored.  Kurt Cunningham who died in October, 2015 was recognized with the Richard Geyser Community Leadership Award. Cunningham dedicated much of his life toward the betterment of the San Diego LGBTQ and HIV communities. He was the only San Diegan recognized. The Kurt Cunningham Counseling Services Fund received a $5,000 grant, $4,000 of which was donated by The San Diego Human Dignity Foundation and the Rob Benson Foundation donated $1,000.

Bank of America named Goodwill Industries of San Diego County as 2015 Neighborhood Builders. The organization was recognized for their work in job creating and assuring the employability of people with disabilities and other barriers to employment. The Neighborhood Builders award combines leadership development resources for the nonprofit’s executive director and an emerging leader within its organization, along with $200,000 of flexible funding intended to help increase the nonprofits capacity and impact in San Diego.

The 7th annual LightBridge Hospice Community Foundation 5k Walk/Run was held on Oct. 11 at Liberty Station. $35,,000 was raised to fund special programs for hospice patients and their loved ones. “Celebrating Life’s Moments” included a pet adoption with animal rescue organizations to reflect the walk’s theme.

San Diego Run for the Hungry is being held on Thanksgiving Day, November 26,  at the Westfield Horton Plaza Broadway Circle turnaround. Proceeds benefit food assistance programs at Jewish Family Service of San Diego and the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. The 10k starts at 7:00 a.m. and the 5K at 8:15 a.m.

HUYA Bioscience International held a reception on Nov. 13 to honor its 10 years of international pharmaceutical innovation and partnership. The company contributed $20,000 to the Breast Cancer Angels, an organization that provides financial and emotional assistance to breast cancer patients and their families.

San Diego Habitat for Humanity partnered with the National Association of Realtors to help build a home in conjunction with the REALTORS Conference and Expo held from Nov. 13-16. Realtor volunteers installed siding, roofing, mounting indoor fixtures and landscaping at two home of Habitat’s Foundation Lane Community in El Cajon. In addition, a donation of $50,000 was presented to Habitat for Humanity.

Winners of the Advisor of the Year program were announced on Oct. 22 at a ceremony held at the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology. The program was sponsored by BNY Mellon Wealth Management. Winners were Jeff Baglio, DLA Piper; Barbara Borden, Cooley; Alan Creutz, Merge Point; Craig Garner, Latham & Watkins; David Michaels, Capstone Partners; Shane Orr, BDO; Paul Polito, Polito Eppich; Joel Reed, RA Capital Advisors; Michael Umansky, Sheppard Mullin.
