New Children’s Museum Receives Grant from Target

For the 6th consecutive year, Target Corporation has awarded a $50,000 grant to the New Children’s Museum to fund discounted Museum admission one Sunday per month. The grant funds the Museum’s Target Dollar Second Sundays, allowing families to enjoy the Museum. The grant is part of Target’s ongoing efforts to build strong, safe and healthy communities across the country. Target Dollar Second Sundays is one component of the Museum’s expansive community access offerings that serve nearly 35% of the Museum’s visitors.

Starry Starry Night, Voices for Children’s Gala was held on Sept. 19 at the San Diego Polo Club. The event raised $1.37 million for foster children in San Diego County.  A total of 2,260 foster children will be served as a result of funds raised at this event. Major sponsors included Qualcomm, Cox Communications, Hughes-Marino, the Farrell Family Foundation and co-chairs Stephanie Bergsma and Dwight Hare.

The Solutions for Change 5th Annual Gala

The Solutions for Change 5th Annual Gala raised $1 million to support the new initiative called Mission: Solve Family Homelessness, which will provide solutions to 200 more homeless families.  An Evening to Remember was held on Sept. 19 at the Jet Source airplane hangar at the Carlsbad Airport. Taya Kyle, wido of U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, was one of the guest speakers. Sponsors included The Issa Family Foundation, TaylorMade Golf Company, The Bob Baker Foundation, Tri-City Medical, Wells Fargo and Genentech.

Ramona Community Foundation, an affiliate of The San Diego Foundation has awarded $41,473 to 10 nonprofit organizations. The grants were awarded at the RCF 4th Annual Grant Celebration on Oct. 1 at Salerno Winery in Ramona. Organizations receiving grants include: Boys and Girls Clubs Ramona Branch, Eric Paredes Save a Life Foundation, Feeding America San Diego, In His Steps Christian Recovery Homes and the Ramona Senior Center. RCF is dedicated to improving the quality of life and meeting emerging needs in Ramona.

Celebration Under the Dome

The San Diego Public Library Foundation’s second annual Celebration Under the Dome was held on Oct. 3 at the San Diego Central Library. Qualcomm was the Title Sponsor of the event which raised $500,000 to support all 36 San Diego libraries. Audrey Geisel was the Honorary Chair and Katie and Dan Sullivan and Linda and Mel Katz were co-chairs for the four separate parties on three levels of the library.

The San Diego County Bar Foundation’s 18th Annual Evening in La Jolla was held on Sept. 19 at the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla. The event raised $105,000 which will go toward providing legal assistance to those in challenging circumstances such as foster children and at-rik youth, domestic violence victims, sick and disabled individuals, refugees and the elderly. Sponsors include Cohelan Khoury & Singer, General Dynamics NASSCO, Best Best & Krieger, Dentons, and Procopio, Cory Hargreaves & Savitch.

Fore Kids! Golf Tournament

Promises2Kids held its FORE KIDS! Golf Tournament on Sept. 21 raising $120,000 to benefit San Diego County foster youth. The event was hosted by Jeannie and Arthur Rivkin at the La Jolla Country Club. Foster youth were teamed up with a foursome through a Promises2Kids program, Coach a Youth. The foster youth were able to enjoy the game as well as to get to know the golfers that directly supported them.

Center for Community Solutions is hosting its 11th Annual Chef Showdown on Oct. 29 at the Port Pavilion at Broadway Pier. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the objective of the event is to create awareness as well as to benefit programs and services of CCS that provides advocacy, legal support, healing and prevention services for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and elder abuse.

San Diego philanthropist Polly Puterbaugh has donated $50,000 to the San Diego Performing Arts League for its new ArtsTix Ticket Center which will be opening at the remodeled Horton Plaza Park. “This is the largest gift by an individual to assist us in making the new ticket center a reality,” said Candis Paule, SDPAL Board President.
