The sixth annual Miracle Babies fundraiser, Moonlight in Casablanca Gala was held on Oct. 10 at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar. The $450,000 goes toward providing education, support and financial assistance to families with newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit. Event sponsors included the Sydney Holland Foundation, La Jolla IVF, Tri-City Medical Center, San Diego Neonatology, AMN Healthcare, First Foundation, Sharp Mary Birch Hospital and Union Bank. “As overwhelmed families of premature babies grapple with uncertainties, they often find themselves faced with unexpected financial difficulties,” said Dr. Sean Daneshmand, founder of Miracle Babies.

Huntington’s Disease Society of america San Diego Chapter

The San Diego Chapter of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America held its 15th annual Celebration of Hope Gala on Oct. 10. The event raised $150,000 to serve ongoing research and education toward finding a cure and provide support services for those living with Huntington’s disease. The Guthrie Award, HDSA’s highest honor, was presented to Bill Habeger, president of B.H. Gold Insurance, and to Joe Smith, LA Angels pitcher. They were recognized for their consistent and generous support of the HD community.

On Sept. 18 the La Jolla YMCA held an event to kick off the community phase of their $15.5 million capital campaign and to recognize donors.  To date $13.7 million has been raised toward the goal with an additional $35,000 coming in donations the day of the event. Donors who were recognized included the Dan & Vi McKinney family, the Beyster family and the So family. Fundraising will continue until the goal has been reached so that all four phases of construction can be completed.

Holes for heroes

The 2015 Holes for Heroes Military Appreciation raised $133,000 at its event held at Fort Lomas on Sept. 18. The event held in conjunction with the San Diego Downtown Breakfast Rotary Club Foundation, was sponsored by Gilbert J. Martin Foundation, Cubic, Wells Fargo/Private Bank, Sycuan Casino, Barney & Barney and Sunroad Auto Group. Four of the recipients were each presented $7,000 checks at the Rotary Club breakfast meeting on Oct. 21. They are SD Medical Center Balboa Hospital; YMCA Camp Pendleton; Operation BIGS, Big Brothers/Sisters San Diego; and One More Wave Surf Corp.

sycuan supports susan g. komen san diego’s race for the cure

Susan G. Komen San Diego’s Race for the Cure has designated Sycuan Casino employees Rochelle Bradley and Fran Robinson Honorary Survivors. Sycuan partners with SGK throughout the year as well as supporting Breast Cancer Awareness month. Sycuan has had the largest team in the organization’s event history for the past several years. Bradley and Robinson both participated in this year’s race on Nov. 1.

pedal for parkinson’s san diego

Pedal for Parkinson’s San Diego raised $15,000 on Sept. 27 at at the bike riders event which was a fundraiser for Summit4StemCell, supporting a non-embryonic stem-cell research project underway at the Scripps Clinic and Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla. Some of the sponsors were Revolution Bike Shop, Dolce Pane and Vino, Cycling Camps of San Diego and Recify Software.

The Moonlight Cultural Foundation held a fundraising concert, “Megan Hilty Under the Stars” on Oct 2. Broadway star Megan Hilty performed at the Moonlight Stage Amphitheatre. The concert raised $42,000 to help support arts education programs for youth and adults, foster engagement of new audiences, and increase student/educator participation in the artistic process.

The 6th Annual River Fest “Connecting Communities” was held at the Morgan Run Country Club on Oct. 11. The event netted $50,000 for the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy. An announcement was made celebrating the completion and progress on key segments of the 70-mile Coast to Crest Trail in 2015.

The 37th annual Ocean Beach Awards Celebration was held on Oct. 22. The Ocean Beach Main Street Association recognized businesses and community leaders for their impact in the Ocean Beach Community. The program highlighted events and accomplishments over the past year honoring community members who died over the past year, including Kevin McKay, David Linton, Alan Kajiwara, Yvonne Cruz and Mike Hardin. Steven Yeng, owner of OB Noodle House and Bar 1502 was recognized with the “Like a Boss” award.

century club tee-off celebration

The second annual Century Club Tee-Off Celebration was held on Oct. 21 bringing together twelve San Diego charities to kick-off the 2016 Farmers Insurance Open fundraising season. The charities are part of the Champions for Youth program – a program designed to grow the power of giving and heighten the profile of local charities. The Champions for Youth charities will fundraise from now until the end of the Tournament on January 31, 2016. The 2016 Champions for Youth organizations include: Armed Services YMCA San Diego, Junior Achievement of San Diego, Just In Time for Foster Youth, Monarch School, Pro Kids | The First Tee of San Diego, Promises2Kids, San Diego Center for Children, San Diego Youth Services, SAY San Diego, STAR/PAL, Support the Enlisted Project, and Voices for Children.
