Richard Nares, co-founder of Emilio Nares Foundation is among CNN’s Top 10 Heroes of 2013. The annual campaign recognizes everyday people who are changing the world during the CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute broadcast on Dec. 1 hosted by Anderson Cooper. Richard and his wife, Diane Nares started ENF after losing their only son, Emilio to cancer. Each of the Top 10 CNN Heroes will receive a $50,000 grant, and one of the honorees will be named the CNN Hero of the Year, receiving an additional $250,000 grant to further aid their cause. Voters can log on to CNNHeroes.com to cast their ballots for Richard once a day until Nov. 17.

Sandy Hanshaw at Qualcomm Stadium for the Chargers vs. Colts

The San Diego Chargers hosted 30 American Cancer Society Breast Cancer Survivors on Oct. 14 prior to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk which will be held in Balboa Park on Oct. 20.  As part of the NFL’s national Crucial Catch campaign, the Chargers welcomed the survivors on to the field as part of their practice session and through the game itself during their victory against the Colts.

The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation hosted its 23rd Annual Charity Golf Tournament at Sycuan Golf Resort. Golfers played both the Willow and Oak Glen courses. The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation contributed $100,000 to two different charities this year.  StarPal and the SEAL – Naval Special Warfare Family Foundation each received $50,000. “Each year we are overwhelmed by the generosity of our vendors, business partners and neighboring tribes with the amount of support we receive as we participate together to give back to our community,” said Chairman Daniel J. Tucker, Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation.

Andrew Walker of Serta International is the Honorary Chair for the Casa de Amparo 15th Annual Crystal Ball Gala to be held on Oct. 26. Walker is being recognized for his support of the newly built Casa Kids Campus in San Marcos. “At Serta, we believe in giving back to the community,” says Walker. “Giving Casa Kids a comfortable place to sleep was the right thing to do. I am impressed by the passion of the Casa de Amparo staff, their philosophy of care, and the heartwarming stories of kids who have been helped.”

Kids Included Together (KIT) was one of the top 3 finalists in the American Airlines’ video contest. CJ Lucke, KIT’s Managing Director, was able to attend the Inc. 5000 Conference in Washington DC and celebrate with the other finalists. Kit was awarded two American Airlines tickets to DC, hotel accommodations at the Gaylord and 30,000 Business Extra points.

Home Start celebrated the dedication of its second maternity shelter on Oct. 18 which will provide housing and supportive services to homeless mothers. The property was renovated with the help of HomeAid San Diego. The project is a result of the building and real estate industries coming together to donate their time, money and materials to make this project a reality.

AT&T presented a $50,000 Aspire grant to Urban League San Diego

The Junior League of San Diego hosted its third annual Foster Youth Community Impact Forum on Oct. 24 at University of San Diego. Guests viewed a documentary screening of “Aging Out- Case Closed,” an award-winning film profiling the life of a young mother and her heartbreaking experiences within the foster care system. A panel spoke on topics such as the foster care system and the need for support.

AT&T presented a $50,000 Aspire grant to Urban League San Diego for its Project Ready program at the annual Equal Opportunity Day Summit held on Sept. 20 at Liberty Station. Ignacio de la Torre, regional vice president of AT&T San Diego presented the Aspire grant from AT&T’s Aspire program which is focused on education and career readiness, helping more students graduate from high school ready for careers and college, and to ensure the country is better prepared to meet global competition. Urban League San Diego’s Project Ready program, in partnership with San Diego Unified School District, will offer academic tutorial and support to improve GPA and SAT scores, and mentorship and counseling to enhance social development.

Dress for Success San Diego hosted its third annual “Moonlight Chic: Rooftop Cocktails, Cuisine & Couture for a Cause” fundraiser at the Palomar Hotel. The event raised $20,000 to provide resources and support for programming for women in need. Fashions were presented by LOFT’s.
