The 28th Anniversary Gala for Grossmont Hospital Foundation was held on Nov. 2 at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel  & Marina. The $300,000 raised will go toward Sharp Grossmont Hospital’s planned Heart and Vascular Center as well as the hospital’s services and programs. Connie Conard and Ruth Simpson were co-chairs for A World of Enchantment. Presenting sponsors were the Glenn Napierskie Family and Sharp Grossmont Hospital Medical staff. The Visionary Sponsor was the Shea family.

Walden Family Services held its 10th annual Wine D’Vine Gala on Oct. 30 at the Grand Del Mar Hotel. Country music star Jimmy Wayne provided entertainment for the event which raised $300,000 to further the organization’s mission of providing care and support to foster children and families. The Aficionado Sponsor of Wine D’Vine was Trust Employee Administration & Management. The event was co-chaired by Dawn Grossman and Michelle Ozanne. “We are pleased with the support of the community. The generosity expressed by all those who attended, as well as that of our sponsors and donors, will go a long way in helping us continue to be an advocate for San Diego’s foster youth,” said Teresa Stivers, Executive Director of Walden Family Services.

YWCA Becky’s House Walk a Mile In Her Shoes

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes was held on Oct. 17 with 450 participants and almost half were men. The net amount which goes to Becky’s House is $87,000. Donations are still being accepted to bring the total to $100,000 which was the goal for the event. All of the monies go directly into running Becky’s House comprehensive services for women and children escaping domestic violence.

Bank of America donated $95,000 towards funding a new healthcare clinic at the Hawley Vets Center in El Cajon in partnership with the Volunteers of America. Volunteers from Bank of America worked at the Hawley Veterans Services Center to complete a landscape beautification project which will serve as the launch to a new partnership with Volunteers of America. Bank of America contributed in partnership with Eco-Media, a weekly medical clinic will be established to enhance healthcare for veterans in Volunteers of America, Southwest’s Hawley Veterans Services Center.

Union Bank and KPBS Local Heroes Awards were presented to Jane Dumas, a member of the Jamul Bank of Kumeyaay Indians and Rose Margaret Orrantia, program manager at the Academy for Professional Excellence’s Tribal STAR (Successful Transitions to Adult Readiness) program at San Diego State University. The awards were presented in celebration of American Indian Heritage Month on Nov. 13 at Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla. The Local Heroes program recognizes and pays tribute to exemplary leaders who are making a difference by improving their workplace, community, region and the world.

Senior Community Centers has launched their Fill A Plate campaign to raise funds to end senior hunger in San Diego. Azucar in Ocean Beach is the first to sign on to assist in the effort. In November, Azucar is asking customers to make a $2 donation towards the Nutrition Program at SCS.

Volunteers from the Escondido Home Depot and other community members volunteered to transform the Community HousingWorks’ Avocado Court rental community to give the garden a makeover. The City of Escondido donated the land for the garden, with capital costs funded by San Diego County Supervisor Dave Roberts and the Escondido Charitable Foundation. The project was valued at $60,000.

Star of India received a Proclamation in honor of its 150th Anniversary. On Nov. 11 Interim Mayor Gloria presented the proclamation at a celebration at the Maritime Museum, honoring Nov. 11-17 as Star of India Week in the City of San Diego. State Senator Marty Block, Ramsey Town Commissioner Chairman Capt. Nigel Malpass and Ramsey Town Commissioner Deputy Chair Sylvia Beattie.
