Twenty San Diego County high school seniors got a surprise $5,000 scholarship from Cox Charities during its 20th anniversary celebration June 6 at Coasterra. While the students were aware they’d be receiving a scholarship, they were kept in the dark about the amount.

“This year, Cox Charities celebrates is 20th anniversary and 20 years of employees giving back to the community, which makes these scholarships even more special,” said Chanelle Hawken, Vice President, Government and Public Affairs.

In total, Cox Charities, the philanthropic arm of Cox Communications, has awarded $1.6 million in scholarships to more than 650 students.

Wounded Warrior Homes has built its third house for veterans

Wounded Warrior Homes opened its third house for transitioning veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injuries June 5. The Oceanside home will house four veterans at a time as they move from active duty to civilian life.

“We’re all here to support the veterans in our community, to give back just a little of what they’ve given us through their service, ” said Executive Director Mia Roseberry. “We not only provide the transitional housing, we provide the support services to help them get back to work, get to VA appointments, find jobs, go to school, we’ve got the food pantry, and food for service dogs. We all work together as a collective.”

Costumed characters ran a 5K to support babies in intensive care

Nearly 1,500 people pounded pavement at Liberty Station NTC Park last month to raise money for Miracle Babies, a local nonprofit that supports the families of infants in the neonatal intensive care unit. The superhero-themed 5K brought in more than $70,000.

“Having a baby born prematurely or with a congenital abnormality is emotionally and financially challenging, the community’s support will help lift the financial burden off of these families so they can focus on the health of their baby,” said Miracle Babies founder Sean Daneshmand, MD.
