Sponsor Post: Californians are the Best Recyclers

Recycling is a way of life in the Sunshine State

Living in California, you can be proud of being a part of the state with some of the nation's highest recycling statistics. There are plenty of reasons for this. California makes recycling more easily accessible to residents, with more curbside recycling pickup programs per area than almost any other state. The state also encourages recycling through several laws that make it tough to just dump otherwise-recyclable items into landfills around the state.

While Californians are by no means perfect recyclers, recycling is more of a way of life here than it is in many other areas of the country. Luckily for Californians, recycling saves the state – and tax payers – plenty of money, since recycling is more efficient and profitable than running landfills, which keeps the overall tax costs of waste management down as much as possible throughout the state.

Californians also help save their environment by recycling as much as they do. One press release detailing the state's recycling efforts in 2007 noted that the record high levels of container recycling in that year helped reduce toxic air pollutants by about 1 million tons, reduce CO2 emissions by over 2 million tons, and reduce water pollution by about 5 thousand tons. Besides all this, the jump in container recycling that year meant that Californians saved enough energy to power about 400,000 homes for an entire year!

While California is one of the best states for keeping the environment healthy and green, there's always room to improve. You can continue to help California keep waste costs down and keep the environment healthier and greener by recycling in your home and even by implementing recycling programs in your school or work place.
