With the opening of the newest Waters Fine Foods & Catering, inside the America Plaza trolley station, downtown workers (and residents) have another option for lunch, whether it’s a simple sandwich, a hot entree, or a smattering of deli-style salads. The menu features weekly specials, including soup, salad, sandwiches, and dinner entrees, plus a long list of “everyday favorites”. Two options that looked particularly worthy were the bacon and jarlsberg quiche, which you can get by the slice for just $4.50, and the turkey pesto sandwich. It’s one of 19 different sandwiches on the permanent menu. Add in the weekly specials and you’ve got 21 to choose from.

I loved the simplicity of the turkey sandwich ($8.25), which is crafted with house-roasted turkey breast, not deli meat. It’s stacked on soft slices of rosemary bread with red leaf lettuce, a juicy slice of tomato, and a trio of toppings that elevate it far beyond most deli sandwiches: jarlsberg cheese, lemon aioli, and an herbaceous freshly-made pesto.

By itself, the sandwich is plenty for a light lunch, but one benefit of Waters is you can amp up your meal with a healthy side, like roasted root vegetables, mixed fruit, or this vibrant vegetable medley. Sides are priced by the pound, so load up or get just a little.

There are plenty of seats inside the cafe, and outside, on the sidewalk, but judging from my experience, the newest Waters location has definitely caught on with the office crowd. At 11:00, when the shop opened its doors, I was first in line. Ten seconds later, there was a mini mob. If you can’t score a table, a bench outside the Santa Fe Depot is a good plan B.

Waters Fine Foods & Catering is located at 555 West C Street (map). Operating hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
