Azucar might not be top-of-mind for savory fare. The Cuban-inspired bakery in Ocean Beach is probably better known for their mojito cookies and creative cakes, but that could change come Fathers Day weekend, when the Cubano croissant is officially released into the wild on Saturday, June 15th.

Flaky croissant dough is wrapped around honey smoked ham, house-made slow-roasted pulled pork with mojo sauce, baby Swiss cheese, dill pickles and mustard. The croissant has all the traditional components of a Cuban sandwich, but because it’s baked, the flavors have more time to mingle and meld than in the standard sandwich presentation (which is toasted in a panini press or a plancha).

One Cubano croissant makes for a nice breakfast or snack (particularly when paired with a cafe con leche), but to make a real meal out of them, you might need two. Better yet, grab a guava cheese pastry (ideally, warmed up). The tangy, not-too-sweet fillings make for the perfect sweet finale.

Cubano croissants are priced at $5.75 each. They are available on Saturdays and Sundays only. Azucar is located at 4820 Newport Ave. in Ocean Beach (map)
