San Diego Magazine Cover Contest

Over 700 votes were cast for our first ever Best of San Diego cover contest

Published:

For the first time in San Diego Magazine history, we decided to let local designers and artists take over the task of designing the cover of our annual Best of San Diego issue. Over 700 votes were cast, and in the end, Shawn E. Parr's design was the winner -- based on a highly scientific combination of online voting and our Creative Director and newsstand consultant's professional opinions. Parr's cover grabbed 34% of the online vote, and was a favorite among San Diego Magazine staffers as well.

Parr's cover features local pro surfer (and owner of North Park's Aloha Sunday Supply), Kahana Kalama holding up a sign made of letters from neighborhood signs all over San Diego. Kalama is also named as a top style setter in the issue.

Runners-up (L-R) were Alexis Ward, Founder, Creative Director, and Illustrator for The Visual Rebublic, who captured 25% of the vote with her colorful, graphic cover; Benjamin DeHart, Artist and Graphic Designer for DeHart Designs, whose rendering of iconic San Diego landmarks and cuisine won him 14% of the vote; and Kelli Larson, Design Director at Jedidah Clothing, whose artistic cover made of paper cut-outs grabbed 11% of the vote.

The Best Of San Diego issue hits newsstands on August 2nd, and subscribers' mailboxes this week.
