Deals and Steals: Roppongi

Grab today's Deal and get $30 worth of food and drink at Roppongi in La Jolla for $15

When it comes to Asian restaurants, few offer as much selection as Roppongi. Unlike most Asian restaurants, which have menus so similar they're practically interchangeable, Executive Chef Stephen Windows has put together an inventive menu of dishes that draw inspiration from Japanese, Chinese, Mexican, and Indian cuisine. Today's deal -- $15 for $30 worth of food and drink during lunchtime -- is a great way to sample Roppongi's expansive lunch menu, which includes everything from Asian tapas to soups, salads, and sandwiches.

I sampled three dishes from the Asian tapas menu, which made for a tasty, refreshing lunch that was (almost totally) light and healthy. Ordinarily, I'm the type of diner to forgo appetizers and skip directly to the entree, but Roppongi's tapas were all so intriguing that I had to call over a manager to help me decide. In the end, I chose the Polynesian crab stack, ($18.95) pictured above, the heirloom tomato and watermelon salad ($9.95), the chicken satay ($10.95), and a special something for dessert.

Everything was so delicious that it's hard to pick a stand-out dish, but if pressed, I'd have to go with the heirloom tomato and watermelon tomato salad, which was dressed with feta cheese, mint, thai basil, and a sherry vinaigrette. The salad was like a fresh, new take on caprese -- the perfect light and healthy dish for summer. The Polynesian crab stack was also a great dish to try, particularly if you're a first-time diner. It's the perfect starter to split (or, keep it all to yourself!) The sweetness of the mango was especially tasty with the crab.

The chicken skewers ($10.95), may not be the most photogenic dish, but the curried peanut sauce was so tasty, I spent the meal trying to maximize every drop of it. The sauce was creamy with a touch of spiciness, like a Thai panang curry.

Dessert wasn't something I was expecting to order, but Roppongi's list of sweet endings looked so good, I couldn't resist. With everything from cheesecake to bread pudding, plus this molten chocolate cake served with vanilla gelato, there's something to satisfy every sweet tooth.

Cutting inside the cake revealed a warm and gooey chocolate center. The combination of the warm cake and the cool gelato was a knock-out. This cake was definitely a good argument in favor of saving room for dessert!

With so many dishes on the lunch menu, Roppongi is a great spot for a healthy lunch, so grab today's Deal and start planning your perfect meal.
