El Jardin Closes, Buona Forchetta Opens North Park Pizzeria, and More San Diego Food News

The latest restaurant rumors, openings, and coming-soons to kick off August

There's a new executive chef at The Med at La Valencia in La Jolla. San Diego native Timothy Ralphs (Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa, Omni San Diego), is now leading the kitchen.



Buona Forchetta is opening a small pizza restaurant at 3068 University Avenue in North Park at the end of August, Gelati & Peccati. It will serve seven styles of pizza al taglio (Roman-style square or rectangular slices) and gelato. Peccati means “sins” in Italian, so each pizza is named after one of the deadly sins. The Lussuria, or lust, for instance, has mozzarella with guanciale and shaved black truffle, and will be served on gold paper.



Later this fall, the owners of Wonderland Ocean Pub are opening La Doña, a cantina and Mexican restaurant, in Ocean Beach in the space that Nati’s occupied in the neighborhood for 60 years.



Carruth Cellars Wine Garden in Little Italy added a new wood-fired pizza oven that churns out six different pies.



Need a cure for the Monday blues? Jeune et Jolie launched a new prix fixe menu, on Monday nights only, that includes three courses for $35, and wine pairings for an additional $15.



An’s Dry Cleaning is teaming up with Specialty Produce to launch a limited-edition menu of gelato flavors that will be available at the North Park shop starting Sunday, August 4. Some of the flavors include: chocolate, popcorn, and Tajín; brown butter, whey, squash blossom, and nectarines; and vegan cucumber and melon with scorpion pepper salt. The special flavors are expected to be in stock for only two weeks.



Yesterday it was announced that El Jardin will close for a month for a complete redo. The restaurant will reopen as El Jardin Cantina, and without its star chef, Claudette Zepeda-Wilkins.
