Embracing San Diego’s History

Three ways I've been loving San Diego's past

By Gloria Tebelman

1. Visiting the San Diego History Center

As our Editor explained here, October was a tough month. We needed to include history and doctors on the same cover. In the process of finding the perfect image for our cover, I spent a few hours one morning in the basement of a building in Balboa Park. also known as the San Diego History Center. The research library has 45 million pieces of paper and 2.5 million images. I could have spent days looking at old photos (especially the ones of my hood: University Heights!)

Anyone can visit the research library (8$ a visit), and buy scans/ reprints of photos and documents.

2. Walking San Diego

This summer I took a 13 mile walk through Hillcrest, Balboa Park, South Park & North Park. One of my favorite things about San Diego is all of the vintage signs that have been around forever. I cringe at the thought of them ever disappearing. Here are just a few photos I’ve grabbed during my walks. Follow me on instagram to see more.

3. Perusing the San Diego Magazine archives

The office was littered with the San Diego Magazine archives for over a month. Everyone was involved in finding content for our 65th Anniversary issue (October!). I could have also spent days just looking through the old issues. Read the impressive cover story here. I love seeing the old subscription ads, like this one below, a serious design gem! 3 subscriptions for 10$. We were pushing gift subscriptions way back in 1959 and it’s still a great gift idea.
