So Hot Right Now: Jiu-Jitsu

...not to mention La Jolla Jiu-Jitsu teacher Clark Gracie

By Erin Meanley

Everywhere, this Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I tell ya. It’s hard not to notice the proliferation of studios in recent years. And it seems that every other day I run into some guy just back from Brazil and practicing Jiu-Jitsu. Editor Erin Chambers Smith and I have been tossing around the idea of doing a trend story on this forever. (Thoughts?)

And now there’s a popular internet meme starring one of our very own, La Jolla teacher Clark Gracie, a.k.a. the “only Gracie family member consistently teaching in San Diego.” The web site says he’s the grandson of Carlos Gracie, the creator of Brazilian (Gracie) Jiu-Jitsu.

Look at the photos, if you haven’t seen them already. He’s the “Ridiculously Photogenic Jiu-Jitsu Guy.” Honestly, this guy’s dojo is less than half a mile from where I live. I should take a neighborhood stroll sometime…

Do you practice Jiu-Jitsu? What’s the appeal? (Personally, I’m fascinated by another Brazilian import, Capoeira.) After 2016, I think we’ll all be singing some kinda Brazilian tune…
