Five years ago, Matt Greene never would have guessed that what started as a happy hour with a couple professional friends would turn into an organization with 500 members and a major non-profit contributor.

Matt Green, CEO and Founder of 6 Degrees, realized there was a demand for a group that was social, fun and philanthropic without the rigidity of the traditional networking groups in San Diego. Now, five years later with over 500 members and several major corporate sponsors like Cox Business, 6 Degrees is not only a forum in which professionals can meet and do business is a relaxed atmosphere; it is an organization that acts as a partner to local non-profits.

Make-A-Wish Foundation San Diego, their main partner that has been a beneficiary throughout their growth, is once again to benefit on August 25th at the 6 Degrees 5 Year Anniversary Gala.  This will be their largest event yet filled with fun activities, delicious food from San Diego’s favorite restaurants like Brian Malarkey’s Searsucker (etc.) serving up specialty desserts as well as Urban Solace and BarleyMash dishing out some of their favorite signature items. The Monte Carlo themed evening will include 16 different alcohol/food vendors, casino games, MC Carlo Cecchetto (Channel 8 news anchor) and a ton of silent and live auction items all to benefit Make-A-Wish Foundation.  Over 1,000 guests will enjoy the festivities atop the newly renovated Westin Gaslamp Quarter.

6 Degrees is also donating 25% of any new or renewing membership dues directly to Make-A-Wish during the month of August. Over the last several years 6 Degrees has granted multiple wishes through fundraising at their events.  The most recent wish that was granted as a result of the funds raised at their 2011 Holiday Party went to Make-A-Wish recipient Jacob Kilby, a 16-year-old heart transplant patient.

Make a Wish recipient Jacob Kilby"My one true wish was to surf the greatest breaks on earth – Hawaii," said Kilby. "Thanks to the support of 6 Degrees members and Make-A-Wish Foundation my wish came true!"

Jacob just returned from surfing the North Shore in Hawaii with pro surfer Jamie O’brien. Since his operation 13 years ago, Kilby declares the day as his “heart birthday,” which he celebrates by remembering his donor family and their loss with a personal letter of gratitude. While being a heart recipient might call for a more guarded lifestyle, Kilby has not given up his passion for surfing, and has deemed it “his favorite thing.” A typical Southern California teen, he loves to bike, swim, and spend time with his friends and family by making them laugh.

“We are honored to have had the opportunity to help make such an incredible child's wish come true,” said Matt Greene, CEO/Founder of 6 Degrees. "Jacob is a true inspiration to all of us, and raising funds to fulfill his dream was a natural fit with our mission and our members’ values."
