Look Who’s Up For a Nutty! (Answer: City Ballet)

Haters love to say we’re a cultural wasteland, but one of our Nutcracker productions is up for a (prestigious?) national award. Take that!

California Ballet

Yes, we’re aware this sounds like an SNL skit. No, Lorne Michaels didn’t have anything to do with it. (We checked.)

The Nutty is real. And it’s coming to San Diego. Well, at least, hopefully.

After a highly complicated nomination process involving show patrons voting on whether or not they actually liked it, fifty Nutcracker productions nationwide were nominated for this year’s coveted Goldstar National Nutcracker Award—also known as the “Nutty”—to be announced Wednesday (Dec. 21).

And of those fifty, four productions are S.D. based.

After a round of eliminations, it seems that City Ballet is a finalist, and California Ballet missed by just a few votes. Nuts.

If hanging out with screaming newborns and watching rat duels is your thing—kidding, we love the ballet!—catch an award-nominated performance, and hurry: they’re ending soon!

City Ballet of San Diego—at Spreckels (only thru Wed.!)

California Ballet—at the Civic, thru 12/23

Also nominated but closed: New West Ballet Theatre, San Diego Ballet
