Rules and Regulations

Basic Criteria:

  1. San Diego has some of the freshest seafood, so make that your main ingredient.
  2. The recipe must include the potato of the tropics, plantains. Brought to you by Specialty Produce.
  3. The healthier the dish the greater the appeal.
  4. Nobody wants to spend all day in the kitchen, so 20 minute maximum prep time.
  5. Who wants slave over a hot stove all day, 30 minute cook time is a must!
  6. Nobody has a fully stocked kitchen, 10 ingredients max.
  7. We all have hungry families so make this dish for four.
  8. Skip the hors d’oeuvre and appetizers, entrées only.
  9. Our eyes are bigger than our stomachs and we have to see it to believe it, please send a picture.
  10. No copy cats permitted, the recipe must be original. “Original” is defined as not previously published in the same or substantially the same form. Contestant finalists will be required to certify the entry is “original”.
  11. Tell us how it tastes in 30 mouth watering words or less.
  12. Don’t break the bank, $40 dollar limit on all ingredients.

Eligibility:

The contest is open to residents within San Diego County. Disputes of residency will be determined by the judges.

Employees of CurtCo/SDM, LLC, the Cohn Restaurant Group, all sponsors and immediate family of the above are not permitted to enter the San Diego Magazine: Your Recipe Competition.

Professional chefs are also not permitted to enter.

Criteria and Ingredients:

Judging will be based on: taste, simplicity and appeal.

The recipe must use seafood. It can be a whole fish, or any part or parts; fresh (raw) fish; marinated raw fish, muscles, clams, shrimp, lobster; or any other type of seafood.

The recipe must include plantains.

Recipe must be prepared and cook by the individual who enters contest, and also be prepared in the given amount of time if the person is selected as a finalist.

Judging:

  1. Anyone can submit online to www.sandiegomagazine.com/recipe and complete the entry form pursuant to the on-screen instructions. Or mail in your entry (with first-class postage affixed) to: San Diego Magazine, Your Recipe Contest, 1450 Front Street, San Diego, CA 92101. Mail entry must received by October 31, 2008. To be eligible, you must include your name, complete address, telephone number, e-mail address, a good-quality photo of your dish and a 30 word description with your entry.
  2. The voting process will be conducted online.
  3. The ten recipes that receive the highest number of votes will be revealed two a week for five consecutive weeks by a local media celebrity in an online video (in no particular order). All 10 finalists will be submitted to Deborah Scott.
  4. Deborah Scott will then select her top three recipes.
  5. The top three selected will participate in a cook-off at Indigo Grill. If you are selected as a finalist you must be available on January 27, 2009 for the cook-off (all cooking time and ingredient regulations apply).
  6. Deborah Scott will then select a winner.
  7. The winning recipe will appear in an edition of San Diego Magazine.

By participating in the Contest, entrant certifies that his/her entry is original, has not been previously published or won any award, and does not contain any material that would violate or infringe upon the rights of any third party, including copyrights, trademarks, or rights or privacy or publicity. Sponsor reserves the right in its sole and unfettered discretion to disqualify any entry that it believes contains obscene, offensive, or inappropriate content, that does not comply with these official rules or that is not consistent with the spirit or theme of the contest. The decision of the Sponsor and judges is final and binding on all matters relating to the Contest.

Status and Entries

All entries become property of San Diego Magazine and the Cohn Group. Entry constitutes right to publish and otherwise use recipe in any other way without compensation.

Entries will not be acknowledged or returned.

Judges’ decisions are final.
