Mucho de Mexico

Mucho de Mexico
WELCOME TO OUR MEXICO ISSUE. A lot of very seasoned travelers rave about visiting the country. Still, some are hesitant to slip below the border. For the latter, we found a safe and unexpectedly pleasant way to dip your toes into Baja California. Five Star Tours has airconditioned buses that depart from Old Town to a variety of destinations. There are tequila-sampling tours, and a route through the Mexican wine country of Guadalupe Valley. I tried a tour that stops in Tijuana, continues to Puerto Nuevo for a lobster lunch and lingers in Rosarito Beach before heading home. No muss, no fuss, no driving woes.

For those fully at ease in Mexico, check out our dispatches from selected western and central regions. Julia Beeson frolicked in the Old World splendor of Puerto Vallarta. Ramona d’Viola sniffed the calm, clean air in Mazatlán. Weekend Explorer columnist Jeffrey Lehman found underwater peace in La Paz.

And then there’s intrepid Richard Carroll. We asked him to visit Los Cabos and report on its best offerings. Carroll——who has written extensively on Mexico and lived in Cabo for a stretch——decided to make the 1,000-mile trip, along with photographer Laura Weston, in his two-seater Miata. No buses for this guy. His eclectic feature story begins on page 20.

BESIDES OUR SPECIAL MEXICO COVERAGE, Travels is busy keeping up with industry trends. One that may initially raise an eyebrow is called “babymooning.” Fear not——the term entails couples taking a retreat while the woman is pregnant. The second trimester is reportedly the best time to find a resort that will pamper moms-and-dads-to-be with packages that include relaxing and rejuvenating spa experiences.

Trading homes for vacation rentals is not exactly a new trend. But recently, the practice went way upscale. “Destination clubs” like Quintess and Exclusive Resorts offer four-bedroom homes to members in fine locations all around the world. Of course, initial membership fees run from $175,000 to $425,000; thereafter, annual fees dip to just $12,000 to $27,000.

If those numbers don’t make you blink, try to follow in the footsteps of Fabulous Travels columnist Jeanne Jones. She was invited to meet Prince Charles at Westminster Palace. Live vicariously through her lighthearted tale of taking leave in London.

Enjoy the issue.
