Vegas: Aging Well

GEORGE BURNS ONCE OPINED, “If you live to be 100, you’ve got it made. Very few people die past that age.”

That’s good news for Las Vegas. The city officially commemorates its centennial in May. And at 100, the town is only getting bigger and bolder.

This issue of Travels — a publication three years old but aiming for its own century mark someday — is the first devoted entirely to one city. We fly — some San Diegans drive (yuck) — in droves to the city that really doesn’t sleep. So we wish Las Vegas a happy birthday. All during May, and continuing throughout the year, there are festivities and centennial happenings worth checking out.

For our part in the celebration, we enlisted the help of several experts. One of Las Vegas’ finest scribes, Scott Dickensheets, sums up the 100-year (give or take) history of the city. Susan Marg picks out the plums from her book, Las Vegas Weddings: A Brief History, Celebrity Gossip, Everything Elvis, and the Complete Chapel Guide. And Jeffrey Lehmann, host of PBS-TV series Weekend Explorer, writes about his “killer” time at the city’s eclectic museums.

We also explore the burgeoning Strip, an unpredictable monorail and the return of burlesque, and take a dip in the city’s best pools.

Enjoy the issue. And may all your jacks be paired with aces.
