The Sunday Bar Shuffle
East Village allows me to watch four quarters of Chargers football in four different bars

RONDON’S DOWNTOWN SAN DIEGO
We start at The Corner (10th and J). The Chargers game is just getting started. My buddy Tom orders a bucket of Miller Lites and I snuggle up to a Bombay Sapphire (rocks, olive). Pigskin on the tube and potato skins in the vicinity. We’re ready for some football.
I love the layout of The Corner. Unfortunately the place hasn’t caught on for the NFL’s Sunday Stampede. We call an audible and do a reverse through the door after the first quarter ends. Panthers 0, Chargers 0.
The new Wings-Pizza-N-Things (315 10th) is right down the block. It’s a chain. By now, John has joined up with Tom and I. We survey the scene. John and Tom need some things—like wings’n’pizza—but we decide the place exudes all the energy of a funeral home. So we find ourselves across the street at the Tilted Kilt (310 10th). I’ve blogged about the place before. The waitresses dress in low-cut white shirts and short Scottish kilts. Imagine Hooters, but with Britney Spears singing “Oops! I Did It Again” accompanied by a bagpipe band. Troy catches up with us here. We all scarf down average bar food and map out our next move. Halftime: Panthers 9, Chargers 7.
The third quarter lands us at 804 Market Street, home to Lucky D’s Bar & Grill (& Hostel—no kidding). Gregarious owner Dave “Lucky D” Egan buys us a round of tequila shots. The bar is open and sunny. The TVs are plentiful. The Panthers are up 16-10. We would have stayed for the last quarter, but our wanderlusting quartet has committed to a quest.
The final stop is area titan East Village Tavern & Bowl (930 Market). There’s nary a seat open. To get a table for the 10 a.m. Sunday games, you gotta stand in line before the bar opens. It’s a good-time place—plenty of energy and loud cheering. Well, it was loud up until the last second of the Chargers game. The Panthers won, 26-24. Our small solace was the successful mission. We came (to East Village). We saw (four quarters in four bars). We conquered (thirst and hunger).
What’s your strategy for a Sunday out on the town during football season? Tell us about it below...

you managed to hit all the major area sports bars in a matter of hours...congrats! maybe if the corner didn't serve cold fries there would be more people on a sunday afternoon and yes wings n' things has some serious competition opening across from the kilt but i wish them luck. i am excited to try lucky d's but i doubt it can compare to EVT. they are the grand-father of all east village sports bars!
I totally agree with you on the 4 bars you visited. I checked out Lucky D's this past Sunday for football and was really impressed. The Tavern has it's own identity in EV but I think LD will become as a place to start not just a place to catch overflow.
The food was great, the staff was friendly, and one thing the Tavern doesn't have "polite" bouncers.
Lucky D's has an awesome Mahi Mahi sandwich too. just sayin. And the decor is awesome.. I heard those guitars on the wall all belong to Lucky D! I love the open space and family style long bar tables - fun atmosphere. Glad it's in the hood.
I really liked Lucky D's. Super fun atmosphere. Great sampler platter served in a guitar shaped dish.
Good calls on Lucky D's. My group plans to continue doing the 4 Bars / Four Quarter runs. we'll switch up the bars now and then. But Lucky D's will stay in the rotation...--RonDon
