The Insider
BECKS APPEAL: Soccer superstar and Southland transplant David Beckham took advantage of SoCal’s kid-friendly attractions with a visit to Legoland with his oldest son, Brooklyn. The father-son team noshed at the park’s Ristorante Brickolini and checked out the Egyptian-theme Land of Adventure attraction. There was no sign of Beckham’s perennially stilettoed wife, Posh. Other celebs recently spotted indulging in Legomania: Leah Remini of King of Queens fame and High School Musical’s Corbin Bleu, who came with dad, mom and three sisters in tow.
ROAM (THE GASLAMP) IF THEY WANT TO: Downtown’s Acqua al 2 is a well-known hangout for Padres players looking to carbo-load on fresh pasta or unwind with a cocktail (or six), but the restaurant recently played host to a different kind of player. Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson and the rest of The B-52s came in for a lavish three-hour dinner while in town for a show at Viejas Outlet Center. The big tippers dined on the daily fish special and the menu classico sampler platter while washing down three or four bottles of wine; they even stuck around long enough to pose for pictures with the staff.
TUNE IN: According to the San Diego Film Commission, a shot-in-San Diego TV pilot called The Ex List (based on the Israeli series Mythological X) has been chosen by CBS for the fall lineup. Reportedly starring Alexandra Breckenridge (Dirt) and Elizabeth Reaser (Grey’s Anatomy) and directed by thirtysomething’s Timothy Busfield, the pilot was shot in O.B. The show will continue filming in San Diego.
MORE GLITTERATI MEETS-LITERATI NEWS: Turns out Dancing with the Stars alum Mario Lopez has talents beyond tangoing on television and exposing his abs. The hometown (play)boy and former Saved by the Bell star dropped in at a local Barnes & Noble not long ago to sign copies of his first book, Mario Lopez’s Knockout Fitness. Another small-screen star, La Jolla native Danica McKellar——best known for playing Winnie Cooper on The Wonder Years——has found a second career as an author of math-centric books for young adults. She appears at Warwick’s this month to push her latest tome, Kiss My Math: Showing Pre-Algebra Who’s Boss.
STAR LIGHT, STAR WRITE: Terms of Endearment legend Debra Winger dropped by the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center to plug her new memoir, Undiscovered, about her life as a mom, a three-time Oscar-nominated actress and an ambassador for the blindness-fighting group Sight Savers International. Also making her entrée into authorship: actress–turned–human rights advocate Robin Givens, who promoted Grace Will Lead Me Home at the Marriott Mission Valley. The former Mrs. Mike Tyson was in town serving as keynote speaker at a benefit for the nonprofit Center for Community Solutions, a domestic-violence prevention agency. ——RACHEL ZENN SACHS
