Several theaters offer welcome discounts for those in school
SAN DIEGO DAILY
“Student discount” — two magical words that almost make it worthwhile to pay $17,135 per semester on tuition. I mean, it all evens out in the end. Yeah, right. Add rent, textbooks and food to the mix and the cost of living can be daunting for a college student.
Take an extreme example: My friend has a habit of going to all of the club meetings on campus just for free pizza. Yes, she is that girl. She is also a coupon hoarder. And when she goes to the health center she gets way too excited about her goody bag of aspirin, a mini-pack of tissues and wet wipes.
But you can’t really blame her. She is a broke college student and knows how to work the system.
It’s true: Little extras — a free iPod when you buy an Apple laptop; reduced tickets to Sea World — can make all the difference.
So when I heard about $7 student movie tickets on Wednesdays at the Gaslamp 15 downtown, I had to go. On top of the reduced ticket price, when you show your stub at the concession stand you get a free small popcorn (a $5.50 value) with unlimited refills — a student’s dream.
The inaugural “Student Wednesday” at the Gaslamp 15 coincided with the opening of Tropic Thunder. The theater did not disappoint — the transactions went smoothly and soon I was sitting in my seat watching bombs rain down on Ben Stiller.
If I had gone to the AMC Fashion Valley 18, my regular haunt, and asked for a student discount I would have been politely declined and had to pay the “Adult” price: $8.50. Add a small popcorn to the mix ($5) and an afternoon of entertainment would not have come cheap.
“Student Wednesdays” apply to anyone with a valid student ID: high school, beauty school, trade school, etc. If Wednesdays do not work, you’re in luck — “Student Tuesdays” start this week at Carmel Mountain 12 cinemas.
