A Good, Long Life
Inside
WORRIED ABOUT THE ECONOMY? Fretting over gas prices? Concerned about global warming, overweight kids, the general dumbing-down of the populace and/or other bleak forecasts that affect your world and well-being? If so, we offer some hope.
Researchers in the Scripps Genomic Medicine Program — an initiative of Scripps Health and The Scripps Research Institute — are looking for the fountain of youth. Sort of. Their Wellderly Study is attempting to unravel the genetic secrets of healthy aging. According to our experts, the average healthy life expectancy could one day leap to 110-120 years.
Award-winning writer Bob Rowland tackles the story for us. He reports that we won’t live forever, obviously. But if we could bump our lives to more than a hundred years, we’re more than likely to live to see alternative fuels, environmental stability and a general escape from our current societal malaise. Hey, I’m gonna be an optimist on this.
If we’re going to live longer, we may as well look good while we’re here. In that regard, check out our fall fashion layout. Photographer Kevin Michael Schmitz plotted a level of intrigue in the shoot. There’s conspiratorial edge to the men and women photographed at La Jolla Cove. They’re dressed to thrill. And they’re ready to look the part when Quantum of Solace, the next James Bond movie, opens in November.
IT WAS NO COVERT OPERATION when San Diego Magazine attended the latest Society of Professional Journalists awards dinner at Shelter Island’s Bali Hai. We staged a near sweep. Our stories and layouts won 23 awards in 14 editorial and art categories. That included 13 first-place awards. In addition, the magazine won the Herbert Lockwood “Woody” special award for humor, and took the Best of Show award for magazines.
We don’t have room to name all the talented writers and designers who contributed to our awards sweep (the complete list resides at sdspj.org). But the diversity of categories we commandeered was impressive. We took first, second and third in the investigative competition. We won for stories in the arts, sports and business arenas. And we topped out for best illustrations, photographs and layouts.
San Diego Magazine will be 60 years old this October. The publication was built on a reputation for solid journalism combined with enlightening service articles. We believe — with the help of Scripps researchers or not — we’ll be around for a long time, looking good and feeling fine. Enjoy the issue.
