For handsome outdoor furniture that doesn’t scream “patio,” the answer is this folding ensemble from Indonesia. Made from recycled teak and bamboo, the chairs are $160 each; the table, $395. At Circa a.d., 3867 Fourth Avenue, 293-3328.
An Eye for Whimsy
Shannon and Jim Turner, owners of Girard Avenue Collection, know a thing or two about running a business—they’ve been owner/operators of four Montessori schools in San Diego for the past 20 years. Plus they have three daughters.
Still, they found time to launch this whimsical assemblage of antiques, cottage and vintage furniture, antiquarian books, photography and work by local artisans. The concept is simple—the Turners parlayed their avid interest in collecting antiques into a partnership with other talented vendors, who display their treasures side by side in a store-within-a-store environment. Somehow, each person’s stuff is magically complementary, creating a series of delightful vignettes. Spaces are delineated not by divider walls but by differing finishes to the back wall and designs on the floor.
From the street, you’ll be lured in by weathered Adirondack chairs, weathervanes and charming tchotchkes. 7505 Girard Avenue, 459-7765.
Dangling Donuts
Glass “donuts,” shaped by artist Laura Maddams, float gracefully on long silver chains. Using an ancient technique known as lampworking, Maddams forms her creations by heating glass in lamp oil. Check out the artist’s line of glass beads and wire art at her studio in Balboa Park. At Spanish Village, 1770 Village Place, Studio 41, 238-1744
