Wild Animal Park

Want to go on a safari without leaving San Diego? Just 35 miles north of downtown, you can observe roaming herds of elephants, rhinoceroses and giraffes at the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park. This spectacular 1,800-acre preserve features more than 3,500 animals in their native habitats.

Start your safari with the open-air Wgasa Bush Line Monorail ride. This 45-minute, guide-narrated tour transports you through 3 miles of African and Asian enclosures, putting you and the animals face to face. With more than 400 births each year at the park, you just might see babies, too.

Afterward, take the 2-mile Kilimanjaro Safari Walk to see rhinos, tigers, cheetahs and other exotic animals. The 17-acre Nairobi Village offers a great place to eat, shop or just relax. Daily shows, including the "Frequent Flyers Show" and an elephant training demonstration, are all included with admission.

The Roar & Snore Camping Safari lets you camp in a tent overnight amidst the sights and sounds of the animals who live there. Nature hikes, al fresco dining, a roaring campfire, photo opportunities and close up encounters with animals are part of the adventure. For reservations and information, call 619-718-3000.

A Photo Caravan takes you in an open air truck to feed giraffes and rhinos, hear amazing anecdotes and get stunning photos. HOURS: Open at 9 a.m., 365 days a year. Gates close at 4 p.m., park closed at 5 p.m.
