Old Town

bazaar del mundoIn addition to being California’s second-largest city, San Diego is the state’s oldest, with a rich and colorful history. You can step back in time to early San Diego and catch a glimpse of the Old West in the Seeley Stables, Casa de Estudillo and more at Old Town State Historic Park.

Reflecting San Diego’s Hispanic heritage, Bazaar del Mundo’s collection of specialty shops and restaurants showcases outstanding gifts and cuisine in an Old Mexico setting. For a relaxing break, nothing beats a Margarita and some nachos, with serenading mariachis, in the cool garden courtyard of Casa de Bandini. Many other Mexican restaurants in the area offer fine examples of traditional and modern cuisine.

Just a short walk up the hill, overlooking Old Town, is the Junípero Serra Museum in Presidio Park. Here, the site of California’s first European settlement and mission, founded in 1769 by the Franciscan Father Serra, has been lovingly preserved. A few miles east through Mission Valley lies the Mission San Diego de Alcalá, where services are still held in the original mission chapel.

Walking tour of historic sites 11:00 a.m., noon, 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. daily.

Directions: Located off Interstate 5, north of downtown San Diego. Take the Old Town exit.
