seaport village Venture down that monumental staircase at the back of the Convention Center, wander north past the yachts tied up in the harbor, and immerse yourself in the Cape Cod–style village of shops, restaurants, cookie bars, clowns and sidewalk artists. Count the sailboats, admire the Navy carriers docked across the bay at North Island, or check out the excursion boats cruising the harbor.

In Seaport Village, stop by the Chesapeake Fish Company (619-238-0526) window to watch the men filleting fish—thresher shark, yellowtail and swordfish just in from Mexico’s Sea of Cortéz. Within hours, the processed fish will be on hotel plates in San Diego and Los Angeles, seasoned, sauced and ready for consumption. If you’re a late sleeper (or a late carouser), the fish divvying starts at 2 a.m.
