Cougars Cruise the High Seas
The world's first cruise catering to middle-age women sets sail from San Diego
Even though Anne Bancroft seduced a much younger Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate in 1967, it must have been hard then to believe that 42 years later, a cruise specifically for frisky middle-age females would be so popular.
Feisty, middle-age women will be able to sink their teeth into the World’s First International Cougar Cruise, which sets sail from San Diego en route to Ensenada, Mexico, December 4–7. Sponsored by the Singles Travel Company in Los Gatos, men and women of all ages are welcome on the Carnival Elation to partake in a myriad of social mixers, dancing, pre-dinner drinks, fashion shows and much more on the three-day cruise.
Although 2009 is nearly over, it will be known as the year of the cougar. New shows further spread the popular ideology, such as Courtney Cox’s sitcom Cougar Town and TV Land’s reality show, The Cougar, which has a similar setup to The Bachelorette. Additionally, Miss Cougar America was crowned at the National Single Cougars Convention in Palo Alto and the upcoming California pageant in Beverly Hills will also crown a Miss Cougar California.
Now a hot commodity in the marketplace, sexually charged cougars have their men coming back for more.
“The concept has been out there for a long time, and in the Hollywood scene, people do it all the time,” says Singles Travel Company owner Ann Thomas. “It’s a very romantic idea; the younger, muscular man goes for the older starlet. Hollywood is making it a society we’re buying into.”
Tickets for the event began at $125 but sold out quickly. Prices for rooms will continue to rise depending on the ship’s availability. As tickets continue to sell, the ratio of men to women has been more or less equal so far.
Headlining the voyage is freshly crowned Miss Cougar America 2009, Gloria Navarro of Redwood City. A space will also be reserved for Miss Cougar California, who will be crowned at the California Cougar Convention in Beverly Hills November 6.
If successful, Thomas is likely to continue the themed cruise and try to reach out to more individuals in the east.
