The Doctors Are In
Inside
IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE? How about 449 of them? That’s how many physicians, in dozens of specialties, were chosen by their peers for our 2008 list of San Diego’s “Top Doctors.”
This is the seventh consecutive year for our popular Top Doctors issue, and once again we’ve partnered with the San Diego County Medical Society to identify as many of the region’s outstanding physicians as possible. Did we get them all? Well, no. My own doctor is absent from the list. So far, he hasn’t taken it out on me. And I wouldn’t trade him for Dr. Schweitzer. But each year, we do a better job of finding the best among the best.
Of course, this month’s magazine brings you more than a list of doctors. Parents, grandparents and future parents will want to read “And Baby Makes Four,” Eilene Zimmerman’s primer on how to choose the best pediatrician. It’s not child’s play. In “Anatomy of Achievement,” Julia Beeson Polloreno celebrates the 40th anniversary of the UCSD School of Medicine — recently ranked by U.S. News & World Report as fifth best among all public medical schools. And in a Front Pages entry, “Sister Act,” Polloreno visits with two of this year’s Top Doctors, twin sisters Shakha Gillin and Vishakha Gigler, both graduates of the UCSD School of Medicine.
THIS MONTH ALSO MARKS a big anniversary for San Diego Magazine. Born in 1948, the first independent city magazine in the U.S. celebrates 60 years of continuous publication. And in celebration, longtime contributor Thomas K. Arnold takes readers through a fond and fun trip back through 60 years of words and pictures.
Also worth a closeup look: In “Praising the Bar,” Maya Kroth weighs in on some of San Diego’s best restaurants for eating at the bar; s.d. liddick profiles local diva Dottie Mae Whitsett, who’s spent six decades singing the blues and still waits for that one big break; and famed fitness guru and best-selling author Jorge Cruise, a Point Loma resident, premieres his monthly Staying Fit column with some strong words on burning belly fat and living well. To your health ... and fitness!
