The San Diego Symphony opens its season at Balboa Theatre with a gala and a concert featuring pianist Lang Lang (who performed at the Summer Olympics opening ceremonies), October 4 at 8. Later in the month at the orchestra’s usual venue, Copley Symphony Hall, the Jacobs’ Masterworks Concert series (Friday & Saturday at 8, Sunday at 2) starts off with Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1, October 10-12. Holst’s The Planets spins into orbit October 24-26, with harpist Yolanda Kondonassis premiering Chinese composer Bright Sheng’s Harp Concerto. “Haunted Hamlisch” celebrates Halloween with spooky tunes October 31 & November 1 at 8 in the Winter Pops series.
