Stop Dieting, Lose Fat |

Staying Fit
I USED TO BE 40 POUNDS OVERWEIGHT——and those pounds were primarily around my waist. I lacked confidence and constantly felt tired and old. But then, I discovered a secret that let me lose the weight and, best of all, feel happy. How did I do it? The answer is shocking: I stopped dieting.
I discovered that all past diets, from Atkins to Weight Watchers, could never work. Why? Unless you have the correct ratio of both simple and complex carbohydrates, your body will automatically be set up to store abdominal fat——and you will always feel hungry.
Why should you be concerned about abdominal fat? Belly fat is the most dangerous fat of all, because it becomes metabolically active, having a toxic effect on your organs and cells. That can lead to several diseases, including two of the biggest killers: heart disease and type-2 diabetes. Not incidentally——based on what my clients tell me——it’s also the type of fat that makes us feel the most unattractive.
In the most recent ratings from Men’s Fitness magazine of the “fittest and fattest” cities in the United States, San Diego came in as the 21st fattest city; we used to be third fittest. So consider my new Front Pages column your official wake up call. Each month, I will share simple, San Diego–friendly solutions to eating the right ratio of simple to complex carbohydrates——what I call the S/C Ratio™. Prepare yourselves for some great-tasting ideas to help you get——and keep!——a flat belly.
This month, I’ll share with you my Flat-Belly Shake. It takes just minutes to prepare and will make the most important meal of the day——breakfast——a reality for you. This is an “instant” meal that has less than 2 grams of simple sugar and a full serving of healthy complex carbohydrates. Plus, it’s balanced with the right amounts of protein and good fats. Best of all, it’s truly a delicious power meal.
Jorge’s Flat-Belly Shake
1/2 cup Pacific organic almond milk (unsweetened)
1 scoop Henry’s chocolate whey-protein powder
1 cup of ice
1 teaspoon Barlean’s flaxseed oil
1/2 cup of Ezekiel Almond Crunch cereal
Blend all ingredients except the cereal. Top shake with the cereal, and you’re done!
I love Barlean’s flaxseed oil because it’s the freshest and best-tasting source of omega-3s——and you can get it at any health-food store in town. For whey protein, the best-tasting and lowest in sugar is the local Henry’s brand, with less than 1 gram of sugar. And the Ezekiel Almond Crunch cereal is rich in complex carbs, while having less than 1 gram of simple sugar. You will love it!
