Anyone who suffers from arthritis and rheumatism knows just how painful and debilitating these conditions can be.
That’s why Dr. Alexander Shikhman founded the Institute for Specialized Medicine: to bring relief from the chronic pain of arthritis that allows patients to move freely, without pain, and to enjoy life to its fullest.
Dr. Shikhman’s integrative approach combines the best of traditional Western medicine with alternative and Eastern therapies for the best possible treatment of arthritis and rheumatism.
“Our philosophy is based on an integrative approach of the patient’s care which includes the most advanced technologies in traditional medicine in combination with the best of complementary therapies,” Dr. Shikhman explains. “Our comprehensive diagnostic evaluation consists of complete physical examination, individualized biochemical, immunological and genetic testing as well as state-of-the-art ultrasound and radiographic assessment.”
Once a diagnosis is established, Dr. Shikhman prescribes a customized program tailored specifically to the patient’s needs. “The therapy may include traditional pharmacological agents, customized diet, appropriate food supplements and herbal remedies, and optimized protocols for physical activity and daily exercises,” Dr. Shikhman explains.
Prior to founding the Institute for Specialized Medicine, Dr. Shikhman was a member of Scripps Clinic Division of Rheumatology and a faculty member in the Department of Arthritis Research at the Scripps Research Institute.
Dr. Shikhman was among the first awardees of the National Institute of Complementary and Alternative Medicine to study the molecular mechanisms of glucosamine in arthritis. His research resulted in the identification of several natural products with promising therapeutic benefits for patients with osteoarthritis.
