The Insider
CON MEN: This year’s Comic-Con was even more celeb-soaked than usual, and the Maxim/Pineapple Express party was one of the weekend’s hottest. The stoner comedy, produced by Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, 40-Year-Old Virgin), stars Seth Rogen and James Franco, both of whom were at the Jbar soirée, along with Samuel L. Jackson, David Boreanaz, rapper Method Man, Lost creator J.J. Abrams and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Grey’s Anatomy, Weeds).
CON WOMEN: Though the comic-book crowd seemed to be roughly 98 percent male (and 100 percent nerd), the ladies were not to be outdone. The inimitable Paris Hilton stopped by Stingaree to promote the film REPO! The Genetic Opera, in which the hotel heiress (and would-be presidential candidate) plays a painkiller junkie. Hilton arrived sans boyfriend Benji Madden but didn’t lack companions in the club’s VIP mezzanine. Among the faces in her entourage were costar Alexa Vega (Spy Kids) and Justin Brescia, known to fans of MTV’s The Hills as Audrina’s on-off love Justin Bobby. Hilton sipped Grey Goose cocktails and reportedly missed her private jet back to L.A. . . . Meanwhile, Hilton pal Kim Kardashian and mom Kris Jenner were at the Hard Rock Hotel shooting footage for the next season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians.
HARD ROCKNROLLA: Mr. Madonna, director Guy Ritchie, chilled out in the Hard Rock Hotel’s Green Room for an hour before the press junket for his new film, RocknRolla. Ritchie was joined by his cast, including Jeremy Piven, Gerard Butler and Ludacris. Later, the hotel’s lobby was star central as Entertainment Weekly set up shop, attracting publicity-seekers including Hugh Jackman, Dakota Fanning, Keanu Reeves, Rainn Wilson (The Office), Milo Ventamiglia, Keifer Sutherland and Emily Blunt.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO WU: Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA selected Stingaree’s Penthouse as the ideal location for a birthday celebration for an unidentified lady friend. The rapper ordered a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Rosé and drank Patron with his companion until last call, even stopping to pose for pictures with fans before exiting the club.
SEA-LIST CELEBS: Noted bad-boy actor Mark Wahlberg showed a softer side at SeaWorld when he bottle-fed a 2-week-old California sea lion pup, rescued this summer after being abandoned by its mother. Later, actress Jennifer Connelly stopped in to visit during a family vacation. The He’s Just Not That Into You star took a behind-the-scenes tour of the park, pausing long enough to feed a group of Humboldt penguins, a threatened species . . . Up at Legoland, Dancing with the Stars finalist and conservation activist Cristián de la Fuente presided over the opening of the attraction’s new Sea Life Aquarium.
FALLBROOK TO FOUR SEASONS: Though we were sorry to see Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott check out of their Fallbrook B&B on their Tori & Dean reality series, the pair staged a return to the county for the show’s season-three finale. The couple filmed scenes for the show at Carlsbad’s Four Seasons Resort Aviara, where they were spotted frolicking in the pool with kids Liam and Stella and enjoying a sunset dinner on the resort’s balcony. Tori got pampered in the spa while Dean took to the driving range to show little Liam (armed with his own set of miniature clubs) how it’s done. ——RACHEL ZENN SACHS
